After surviving for nearly two weeks on berries and two muesli bars he discovered, an Australian student who vanished while trekking last month has been located alive.
In the bushlands of Kosciuszko National Park in the southern Australian state of New South Wales, 23-year-old Hadi Nazari vanished on December 26 after splitting from his two companions.
About six miles from a command post that had been established as part of a massive search operation that involved hundreds of people, he was discovered on Wednesday by a group of hikers.
Inspector Josh Broadfoot of the New South Wales Police stated in a statement, “This is an amazing outcome, after 13 long days he has been located.”
Broadfoot told reporters separately that Hazari lived off of food he found foraging around the mountains and drank water from a brook. This featured a few muesli bars in a hut along with some berries.
Hazari claimed to be in excellent health and spirits when being evaluated by paramedics at the search base camp, where his family was spotted embracing him and applauding.
According to the police statement, Hazari and his two pals, who are 23 and 24 years old, had agreed to meet at a campground after they parted ways. His pals started looking for him when he didn’t show up.
Over 300 volunteers and rescuers followed Hazari’s activities in the mountains as the search turned into a multi-agency operation.
The discovery of trash and hiking poles believed to be Hazari’s alongside a river on New Year’s Eve, along with a bonfire, lighter, camera, and camera bag on January 5, increased hope for his survival.
Then on Wednesday, Hazari’s cries for assistance were heard by a trekking group that was passing close to the search area.
James, one of my friends, looked down at the yelling, and we returned the shout. We heard Joshua Dart, 30, tell the Australian broadcaster ABC, “I need help.”
Although his squad was not actively looking for Hazari, Dart claimed to have seen the missing person alert for him.
Hazari seemed to have forgotten the time and thought it had only been seven days when they finally located him over two weeks later.
Dart stated that he had excellent survival instincts.
