As she enshrines her memory in a new foundation to aid other students, the mother of Madison Mogen, one of the four students killed at an apartment near the University of Idaho two years ago, has spoken out about how she is coping with the loss of her daughter.
The November 2022 quadruple killing stunned the country and sparked a national conversation about college campus safety.
The attack claimed the lives of Mogen, a 21-year-old senior, Xana Kernodle, 20, Kaylee Goncalves, 21, and Kernodle’s boyfriend, Ethan Chapin, 20.
Following years of legal wrangling, Bryan Kohberger, 29, is charged with the murders of the four students, and his trial is scheduled for the summer of next year. If found guilty, he might be executed.
Mogen’s mother, Karen Laramie, discussed her loss on Wednesday’s “TODAY” program on NBC.
“I know where the girls are, but it’s real,” she added, adding that “faith is really the basis of how you get up every morning when you have a loss this deep.”
“She is amazing,” she said, using the present tense to describe her kid. According to Laramie, she sees her daughter in nightmares and speaks to her.
It has to do with love and memory. I occasionally dream of her while she’s still hugging you, like when she’s a toddler. And occasionally, when she’s more mature, I see her in my dreams, and it’s all about hugs and gratitude, and it’s just lovely,” Laramie said.
She remembered Mogen as a wonderful infant who became a delight as a teenager.
One time, when we were in Seattle, I watched her as an adult, going shopping and visiting these stores, and I thought, ‘You’re just so friendly to everybody.'”. For example, did we truly instill that in you? “That’s incredible,” Laramie remarked. She simply possessed a sincere affection that defies description.
To continue Chapin’s memory, his family founded Ethan’s Smile last year.
The Made With Kindness foundation, which will collaborate with schools and universities to offer scholarship monies, bereavement health courses, and thorough on-campus safety awareness, is now honoring Maddie, Kaylee, and Xana. The board has Laramie on it.
Mogen and her daughter were closest friends, according to Angela Navejas, co-founder of Made With Kindness.
We simply made the decision to begin something in order to honor and remember the girls and their positive outlook, self-determination, and confidence. ‘Hey, let’s form a foundation in the girls’ honor,’ we decided when we got up one morning. According to Navejas, I picked up some flowers and composed a note to Karen.
According to Laramie, serving on the board has given her a constructive purpose.
Being a member of the scholarship committee and getting to see children read what they have to say and what’s on their minds while also being able to return the favor will be a lot of joy. “Everyone needs a helping hand because the economy is so bad,” Laramie added. We miss our children, and there are no adequate words to express how much you miss them.
The trial for Kohberger, who was detained in relation to the college killings, is scheduled for August 2025. In the case, he has entered a not guilty plea to four counts of first-degree murder and burglary.
When asked about her thoughts on how trial hasn t started though two years have already passed since the crime, Laramie said: I would say that I feel like the legal system is not about the victims, and I ll leave it at that.
