Elon Musk abruptly withdrew his support for the Brexit campaigner who is attempting to upend the British political establishment once more, saying that Nigel Farage should resign as leader of Britain’s right-wing Reform UK party.
A new leader is required for the Reform Party. Musk stated on his social media site X on Sunday that Farage lacks the necessary skills, just hours after Farage called him a friend who made Reform appear “cool.”
Musk is a strong ally of the incoming US president.Last month, Donald Trump appeared to support Farage and posed for a picture with him.
In last July’s national election, Reform received five seats in parliament and 4.1 million votes, or 14% of the total.
Farage has previously stated that he is in talks with Musk on the billionaire’s donation to Reform in order to support it in its efforts to take on the ruling Conservative and Labour parties.
Farage, however, has disassociated himself from remarks Musk made endorsing British anti-immigration and anti-Muslim campaigner Stephen Yaxley-Lennon, popularly known as Tommy Robinson, who is currently incarcerated for contempt of court.
Farage said, “Well, this is a surprise!” in response to Musk’s Sunday post. Although Elon is an amazing person, I’m afraid I disagree with him on this. Tommy Robinson is not the proper candidate for reform, in my opinion, and I never compromise on my beliefs.
Ahead of the February national elections, Musk this month endorsed the Alternative for Germany, a party that opposes immigration and Islam and has been labeled as right-wing-extremist by German security authorities.
Since last summer’s anti-immigration riots, Musk has frequently attacked Prime Minister Keir Starmer in an attempt to sway British politics.
Last week, the founder of Tesla supported calls for a nationwide investigation into how the government’s prosecution department, which Starmer formerly oversaw, handled accusations of rape of minor girls by males of Pakistani descent.
According to a 2014 investigation, between 1997 and 2013, at least 1,400 children in Rotherham, northern England, were sexually exploited.
According to the Times, Starmer was scheduled to respond to the criticism during a press conference on Monday by stating that he approved the prosecution of pedophile groups in 2013 and changed the way prosecutors approach cases involving child abuse.
However, the publication stated that he was unlikely to directly attack Musk because of the billionaire’s close relationship with Trump.
Starmer’s office spokeswoman opted not to comment.
Wes Streeting, the UK health minister, defended Starmer and Jess Phillips, another member of his cabinet, on Sunday after they were criticized by Musk for allegedly stating that the local government should be in charge of any new investigation into a gang rape case.
When individuals like Keir Starmer and Jess Phillips have gone to the trouble of really locking up rapists, pedophiles, and wife beaters, it’s extremely simple to sit there, write something quickly, and press send, Streeting told the BBC.
