Nancy Pelosi hospitalized during congressional visit to Luxembourg

According to a Pelosi spokesperson, former House Speaker Nancy Pelosi, D-Calif., was hurt and taken to a hospital in Luxembourg while traveling with a congressional delegation to commemorate the 80th anniversary of the Battle of the Bulge.

“Speaker Emerita Pelosi is currently receiving excellent treatment from doctors and medical professionals,” said Ian Krager, who provided a statement to reporters on Friday on behalf of Pelosi’s congressional office.

“She regrets that she is unable to attend the remainder of the CODEL engagements to honor the courage of our servicemembers during one of the greatest acts of American heroism in our nation’s history,” Krager said, adding that Pelosi, 84, is still working from the hospital.

He said that Speaker Emerita Pelosi expressed her gratitude to the people of Luxembourg and Bastogne for their service during World War II and their contribution to restoring peace to Europe, as well as her appreciation and admiration for our troops.

The type of harm the former speaker had incurred and the length of time she would require hospital treatment were not immediately apparent.

Krager just stated in the statement to reporters that Pelosi is eager to get back to the United States as soon as possible.

From Luxembourg to Landstuhl, the U.S. military is supporting Pelosi with MEDEVAC, a defense official told NBC News Friday night.

According to a press release from Speaker Mike Johnson’s office, Pelosi was traveling with at least 17 other House members on Friday and Saturday for activities.

Pelosi was accompanied by Rep. Mike McCaul, R-Texas; Rep. Gary Palmer, R-Ala.; Rep. Mike Bost, R-Ill.; and Rep. Mark Takano, D-Calif.

“It is my honor to host this Congressional delegation to the site of the Battle of the Bulge and join the world in celebrating the heroic contributions of the young men who fought and died on the battlefield and ultimately changed the course of human history,” said Johnson, R-La., in a statement prior to their trip.

Pelosi organized a similar trip in 2019 to commemorate the 75th anniversary of the Battle of the Bulge when she was Speaker.

A few weeks ago, the former speaker, who is among the oldest members of the House, was re-elected to her position. Although her campaign has submitted paperwork to stay in office through the upcoming election cycle, she has not stated if she intends to seek for reelection in 2026.

In 2022, fifteen years after becoming the first female speaker, Pelosian declared her formal resignation from the Democratic leadership of the House. Her choice caused her party’s congressional leadership to undergo a generational shift.

She became a significant power broker in the Democratic party after being elected to Congress for the first time in 1987.

Pelosi’s injury occurs just days after Mitch McConnell, the outgoing Senate Minority Leader, was hurt in a fall in Washington, D.C., on Tuesday.

According to a representative for his office, McConnell, 82, slipped while having lunch with Senate Republicans on Capitol Hill, spraining his wrist and sustaining a small cut to his cheek.
