NBA All-Star Game shifting to three-game tournament in 2025

The league declared on Tuesday that the 2025 NBA All-Star Game will now be a three-game, four-team competition.

On February 16, three games will be played in a single day under the new All-Star format. The 24 NBA All-Star choices will make up three of the teams, while the winner of the Rising Stars game, which pitted rookies and sophomores earlier in the weekend, will make up the fourth team in the tournament.

The first team reaching 40 points wins each of the two semifinal matches that precede the final.

In recent seasons, the league has made changes to its All-Star event in an effort to make the game more competitive. Previously, the game ended with a target score rather than a timed fourth quarter, or player captains drafted the teams instead of the East vs. West structure.

The 2024 All-Star game’s lack of defensive effort drew harsh criticism. The East defeated the West 211-186 in the 2024 match, which was the first time a team had scored more over 200 points in an All-Star game since 2017.

In this season’s version, honorary general managers Charles Barkley, Shaquille O. Neal, and Kenny Smith will draft the 24 All-Stars into three teams following their selection by a vote by fans, players, and the media. The Rising Stars entrant’s general manager will be WNBA icon Candace Parker.

On February 6, the All-Star draft will be held.

The All-Star voting process, which is now skewed 50% in favor of fans, 25% in favor of players, and 25% in favor of the media, will remain unchanged.

While second place will receive $50,000 and third and fourth place will receive $25,000, each member of the championship-winning squad will receive $125,000.

San Francisco is set to host the 2025 All-Star game for the first time that the city has done so.
