Nebraska Gov. Jim Pillen hospitalized after he was ‘bucked’ off horse, fracturing vertebra and ribs

Jim Pillen, the governor of Nebraska, was taken to the hospital on Sunday after being flung from a horse, breaking his spleen and breaking his vertebra and seven ribs, according to officials.

According to a news statement from his office, Pillen, 68, a Republican, was hurt after being bucked off a new horse while out on horseback with family on Sunday.

Out of extreme caution, he was brought to Columbus Community Hospital before being transferred to the University of Nebraska Medical Center in Omaha.

According to the announcement, the governor is scheduled to stay at UNMC for a few days and is described as alert and in constant communication with his team.

According to a Monday update from trauma surgeons at the University of Nebraska Medical Center, Pillen suffered seven rib fractures on his left side, a slight fracture to one of his vertebrae, a minor kidney damage, and a spleen injury.

Pillen arrived at the hospital stable and conscious, according to Dr. Hillman Terzian. To stop the bleeding from the spleen injury, he had a technique known as a prophylactic embolization, which is considered a minimally invasive surgery.

His kidney and vertebral damage will heal themselves, according to the doctors. According to them, there was no indication of a head or spinal canal injury, nor was there any harm to his nervous system.

His motivation to get out of bed has been tremendous. “It’s really impressive that he’s already walking laps,” Terzian remarked.

As is common for patients with spleen damage, Pillen is in intensive care. He will stay at the hospital for at least one more day, if not longer, mostly to make sure his rib fractures are treated, and is anticipated to exit intensive care on Monday afternoon.

“We are hopeful and believe he has a very good prognosis,” Terzian stated, adding that no additional surgeries are planned by the specialists.

According to a news statement from his office, Governor Pillen and his family are extremely grateful for the prayers and well wishes from Nebraskans and wish everyone in the state a very happy Christmas.

January 2023 saw the swearing-in of Pillen. He has four children and seven grandchildren with his wife, Suzanne.

“Nebraskans, please join Susanne and I in praying tonight for a speedy recovery for Governor Pillen,” wrote Sen. Pete Ricketts, R-Neb., on X.
