Neil Cavuto, frequent Trump target, exits Fox News after 28 years

After 28 years behind the anchor’s desk, veteran Fox News star Neil Cavuto is leaving, the network said Thursday.

He will be saying goodbye at the conclusion of Your World, the afternoon show he has helmed since Fox News debuted in 1996, on this final day.

In a statement, the network stated, “We are incredibly proud of Neil Cavuto’s incredible 28-year run with Fox News Media. His illustrious career has been a master class in journalism.” His shows have shaped corporate news and established industry standards. We send him our warmest regards and wish him well in his upcoming endeavors.

Cavuto was a mainstay at the network, hosting a total of 12 hours of programming per week over three shows on Fox News and its sister station, Fox Business Network. The 66-year-old was vice president of Fox Business Network in addition to hosting the weekend show Cavuto Live and the weekday shows Your World and Cavuto: Coast to Coast.

At a time when Fox has dominated the cable news landscape due in part to its attraction to MAGA conservative viewers, Cavuto becomes one of the network’s few on-air celebrities to publicly dispute with Donald Trump.

Cavuto frequently criticized Trump, fact-checking his statements on anything from trade tariffs to hurricane-related falsehoods to COVID-19 treatments.

Cavuto has become a frequent target of Trump’s ire in return. In 2020, Trump retweeted criticism of Cavuto, labeling him ignorant and stupid, after the Fox host made fun of his purported usage of hydroxychloroquine as a Covid-19 preventive.

That same year, Trump reportedly spent 20 minutes raging over a Cavuto program where a visitor critiqued his debating skills during a campaign event. Claiming that no one likes Cavuto and his pathetic show, he criticized him directly.

The president-elect told Truth Social earlier this year that Neil Cavuto, Fox’s lowest-rated anchor, is among the worst on television after Cavuto said that Trump lost his first and only presidential debate against Kamala Harris. In fact, I like the losers at the MSDNC and CNN better!

Trump redoubled his efforts a month later, writing that Neil Cavuto’s show is among the worst on television and has the lowest ratings on Fox News. The folks on CNN’s Fake News are superior!

Cavuto once reacted to a Trump diatribe against his coverage by saying, “I don’t work for you.” It’s my responsibility to protect you—not to swoon over you or tear you apart.
