Joe Douglas was fired by the New York Jets on Tuesday, the team confirmed.
In 2019, Douglas, then 48, was in the last year of a six-year deal he had signed to run the Jets’ front office. After a 3–8 start to the season, New York fired him.
In a statement, owner Woody Johnson stated, “I want to thank Joe for his commitment to the Jets over the last six years and wish him and his family the best going forward.”
After serving as the Philadelphia Eagles’ vice president of player personnel for three years, Douglas was hired by the Jets. Since Douglas took over as general manager, New York has a 30-64 record in 94 games.
Douglas has failed in both of his attempts to play quarterback.
Douglas used the second overall pick in the 2021 NFL Draft to choose quarterback Zach Wilson. However, Wilson had a career passer rating of just 73.2 and finished 12-21 in his three seasons with the Jets. This offseason, New York dealt him to the Denver Broncos.
Additionally, Douglas made the disastrous trade for three-time MVP Aaron Rodgers prior to the 2023 season.
Only four plays into the season’s opening game did Rodgerstore his Achilles, forcing Wilson to return to the starting lineup. The season ended with a 7-10 record for New York.
The Jets are on track to end the season with an even poorer record, even though Rodgers is healthy. In a number of statistical categories, Rodgers is also recording career lows.
The sacking of Douglas marks New York’s second significant dismissal of the season. The squad fired head coach Robert Salehafter after a 2-3 start on October 8. The Jets are 1-5 in their last six games.
Despite having great expectations going into the season, New York had a rough start.
Rodgers was fined $50,000 by the team in July for missing a June practice because he was traveling to Egypt.
After a score in the second quarter, Rodgers notoriously shoved Saleh instead of hugging him in the Jets’ third game of the season. (Saleh and Rodgers would both minimize the encounter as innocuous.)
In addition to firing Saleh, Douglas attempted to boost the team’s faltering offense in October by making a trade for receiver Davante Adams Rodgers, a former Green Bay Packers teammate. However, Adams has yet to record 100 yards receiving in a single game with New York and has only grabbed one touchdown in five games.
In the summer, the Jets will now require a new general manager and head coach. New York would have the seventh choice in the 2025 NFL Draft if the season ended today.
Rodgers has one more season left on his deal. Next season, he will be owed $23.5 million.
