(WNY News Now) Before their permission expires, all pistol permit holders are encouraged to verify their certification status and recertify with the NYSP, according to Niagara County Clerk Joseph A. Jastrzemski.
Pistol permit holders were reminded by Niagara County Clerk Joseph A. Jastrzemski to verify their permits to determine whether they need to recertify with the NYSP. While those with premises-restricted permits will still need to recertify every five years, those with concealed carry permits will now need to do so every three years. This implies that everyone who obtained a concealed carry permit or recertified in 2022 needs to do so this year by the permit’s issuing date.
Jastrzemski stated that if any law-abiding pistol permit holder has neglected to recertify, they should do so right away. As I say every year, regardless of how many of us feel about these recertification provisions, it is the law, and I do not want to see any law-abiding permit holder jeopardize their permit by failing to recertify.
Those who need to renew their certification should visit the State Police recertification website at https://troopers.ny.gov/firearms, according to Jastrzemski. Before starting the process, those recertifying should have their driver’s license or non-driver identification and their gun permit on hand, since precise information from both papers will be required.
I would want to remind the public that if you phone the Niagara County Pistol Permit Office regarding recertification, we will have to direct you to the state police website because we have no involvement in the certification process and no access to the state system.
