October’s Last Two Social Security Payments: Essential Information for Retirees and SSDI Beneficiaries

As October progresses, retirees and Social Security Disability Insurance (SSDI) recipients are eagerly awaiting their upcoming Social Security payments. This month, payments will be sent on specific dates based on eligibility criteria.

The first payment is scheduled for October 16, 2024, for those born between the 11th and 20th of any month. To qualify, recipients must not be receiving Supplemental Security Income (SSI), and their benefits should have started after April 30, 1997.

Additional Payment Information

Following this, the next round of payments will occur on October 23, 2024, for individuals whose birthdays fall between the 21st and 31st. Similar to the earlier payment, recipients must meet specific requirements, including the stipulation that their benefits started after May 1997 and that they have not violated any Social Security Administration (SSA) rules.

After these dates, no further payments will be issued for October. However, for those who received a payment on October 3, the next check will arrive on November 1, 2024.

Average and Maximum Payments

The amount of each payment varies based on individual work history and age at retirement. As of August 2024, retirees receive an average monthly benefit of about $1,920, while SSDI beneficiaries average $1,539. High earners can qualify for maximum payments of up to $4,873 per month for retirees and $3,822 for SSDI recipients.

To maximize benefits, individuals should aim to:

  • Earn the Taxable Maximum: For 2024, this amount is $168,600.
  • Delay Filing Until Age 70: This can increase monthly payments by up to 24%.
  • Work for 35 Years: Only the highest-earning 35 years count towards benefit calculations.
