The U.S. Department of Agriculture’s Food Safety and Inspection Service (FSIS) has recalled about 167,000 pounds of ground beef products, both fresh and frozen, due to potential E. coli contamination.
The FSIS said they collaborated with the Minnesota Departments of Agriculture and Health to look into a connection between a number of reported illnesses and ground beef from Detroit, Michigan-based Wolverine Packing Co.
As of Nov. 20, 15 individuals had been reported ill, with symptoms starting between Nov. 2 and Nov. 10. According to a news release from the FSIS, the Minnesota Department tested a sample of ground beef from Wolverine Packing Co. that same day and discovered that it contained a dangerous type of bacteria known as E. coli O157:H7.
A list of all impacted products and pictures of each product label included in the recall were supplied by the FSIS. They stated that the use-by dates for the frozen products are October 22 and November 14 for the fresh products. The USDA mark of inspection for the recalled products includes the number EST. 2574B.
The FSIS was worried that some of these products might be in restaurant freezers or refrigerators because they were distributed to eateries all throughout the nation. In addition to instructing customers to appropriately prepare their raw meat products—cooking all beef products to 160 degrees Fahrenheit to effectively destroy bacteria—they are urging eateries to refrain from serving these goods.
The same strain of bacteria, E. coli O157:H7, was connected to onions in certain McDonald’s Quarter Pounders in October. According to the Cleveland Clinic, it can result in hemolytic uremic syndrome, intestinal bleeding, and bloody diarrhea, all of which can harm renal blood vessels.
