It’s Black Monday in pro football, as the bill comes due for coaches of losing NFL teams

Super Bowl-winning coach Doug Pederson was fired by the Jacksonville Jaguars in what is probably the first of many "Black Monday" firings in professional football. The NFL's somber yearly tradition of identifying fall men for a failed 2024 season ended on Sunday, with Pederson and Jerod Mayo of New England suffering the first casualties. Shortly after finishing their 4-13 season, the Patriots made a snap decision by firing rookie head coach Mayo on Sunday. Pederson went 9-8 in 2022 and 2023 before finishing his three-year stint at Jacksonville with a terrible 4-13 campaign. Once the brilliant field general who guided the Philadelphia Eagles to the 2018 Super Bowl championship, Pederson has had a lengthy decline in popularity. His call of the "Philly Special," a fourth-and-goal trick play t...

Rudy Giuliani resumes testimony at contempt-of-court hearing in defamation case

Rudy Giuliani, the former attorney for Donald Trump, was answering additional questions in court on Monday after being grilled during a contempt-of-court hearing last week for failing to turn over valuables to pay a $146 million defamation judgment against him. In contrast to Friday's hearing, Giuliani is testifying virtually and answering questions from his counsel rather than the attorneys for Ruby Freeman and Wandrea Shaye Moss, the two former Georgia election workers he was found guilty of defaming. Giuliani told his attorney Joseph Cammarata that he had made an effort to follow the court's directives in the case and that his former lawyer was to responsible for any previous infractions. He also bemoaned the trouble he has had managing his numerous court actions, which include two crim...

Fluoride once again scrutinized for possible effect on kids’ brains

The subject of whether fluoride in drinking water is associated with lower IQ scores in youngsters is once again brought up by a recent study. The study reviewed 74 other studies that looked into the potential effects of the mineral on children's IQ scores and was published in JAMA Pediatrics Monday. The study discovered a statistically significant correlation between children's IQ scores and increased fluoride exposure. In an email, Kyla Taylor, the study's author and a health scientist at the National Institute of Environmental Health Studies at the National Institutes of Health, stated that the more fluoride a child is exposed to, the more likely it is that their IQ will be lower than if they were not exposed. It was not possible to interview Taylor. According to Taylor, children's IQs ...

Canada’s embattled PM Justin Trudeau to step down as party leader

In a move that could set the stage for a challenge to succeed him as prime minister, Justin Trudeau announced Monday that he will step down as leader of Canada's ruling Liberal Party. "I intend to resign as party leader, as prime minister, after the party selects its next leader through a robust, nationwide competitive process," Trudeau stated to reporters in Ottawa. "Last night, I asked the president of the Liberal Party to begin that process." With the Liberals trailing the opposition Conservative Party in surveys and internal disputes blazing over his handling of President-elect Donald Trump, the troubled prime minister's exit comes amid mounting calls from within his own party for his resignation. Deputy Prime Minister Chrystia Freeland resigned last month as a result of that pressure....

Trump seeks stay of sentencing in hush money case

In a court petition released on Monday, President-elect Donald Trump is requesting a delay of his Friday sentencing in the hush money case. Trump's lawyers claimed in a file with Judge Juan Merchandated on Sunday that the Court should postpone all further dates in the case until President Trump's immunity appeals are totally and completely decided, and that the Court should cancel the sentencing hearing that was set for January 10, 2025. In a decision last week, Merchan rejected Trump's attempt to have the case dismissed and mandated that his sentencing on 34 felony charges of fabricating business records take place this week, just in time for his inauguration. Trump is appealing those rulings to the state Appellate Division later today, according to the document, and is therefore entitled...
