Hong Kong’s plan to lure back visitors? It’s black and white and eats bamboo

Hong Kong Pandas, pandas, everywhere in Hong Kong. In an attempt to capitalize on its expanding panda population and reclaim its status as one of Asia's most popular tourism destinations, Hong Kong has about 2,500 huge panda statues on exhibit throughout the city. After three years of widespread border restrictions and a crackdown on dissent after 2019 antigovernment demonstrations damaged the city's reputation abroad, Hong Kong has struggled to draw tourists in the same numbers. There are now six pandas in Hong Kong. After years of unsuccessful breeding attempts, its dominant couple, Ying Ying and Le Le, gave birth to twins in August, making Ying Ying the oldest first-time panda mother in history. In February, the cubs might appear in public for the first time. Hong Kong now has the lar...

The bald eagle is officially America’s national bird after Biden’s signature

After President Joe Biden signed a law on Tuesday designating the bald eagle as the official national bird, the bird has officially entered the U.S. code. The bill was unanimously approved by Congress. Despite being the focal point of the United States' Great Seal, the raptor was never officially acknowledged as the nation's national bird. Thomas Jefferson, John Adams, and Benjamin Franklin were among the Founding Fathers who were assigned to design a national seal, but they were unable to agree. Charles Thomson, the secretary of the Continental Congress, produced and had authorized a variant of the seal with a bald eagle in 1782. The seal's eagle with a flag-emblazoned shield, an olive branch in one talon, and arrows in the other, is recognizable to most Americans. In a letter to his daug...

Trial of man accused in Trump assassination attempt in Florida is pushed back

A federal judge decided this week that a man accused of trying to kill President-elect Donald Trump in South Florida will not be tried until September 2025. In an order issued on Monday, U.S. District Judge Aileen Cannon announced that Ryan Routh's trial would start on September 8 rather than February 10. Hawaii resident Routh, 58, entered a not guilty plea. In order to assess the evidence against Routh and determine whether to raise an insanity defense, Routh's lawyers had requested that the judge postpone the trial until at least December of next year. Routh's lawyers contended during a hearing two weeks ago in Fort Pierce, Florida, that Routh had 17 smartphones and a large number of other electronic devices, and that the defense has access to hundreds of hours of police body camera and ...

Trump takes aim at Canada, Greenland and the Panama Canal in Christmas Day posts

Trump began the lengthy post by greeting everyone a Merry Christmas, especially the amazing Chinese soldiers who are lovingly but illegally running the Panama Canal, on his Truth Social platform. The United States "puts in Billions of Dollars in repair money, but will have absolutely nothing to say about anything," he said, alluding to the American lives lost during the canal's construction more than a century ago. Trump then made fun of Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau, calling him "the governor," and reiterated his suggestion that Canada may become the 51st state to join the US. He s...

New York-Handsome Brook Farms recalled roughly 10,800 retail units of 24-count organic, pasture-raised eggs sold under Costco's Kirkland Signature brand, the FDA reported on Nov. 27. The FDA elevated the recall to Class I in an updated notice released on Friday, citing a "reasonable probability that the use of, or exposure to, a violative product will cause serious adverse health consequences or death." Starting on November 22, 25 Costco locations in Alabama, Georgia, North Carolina, South Carolina, and Tennessee started selling the targeted egg cartons. Netflix is hosting the NFL and Beyoncé. But is its tech ready for prime time?

Is the streaming king prepared for a game of football? The NFL's two main events are scheduled to air on Netflix for the first time: the Baltimore Ravens vs. Houston Texans at 4:30 p.m. ET and the Kansas City Chiefs vs. Pittsburgh Steelers at 1 p.m. ET. Beyonc will play songs from her Cowboy Carter country album live for the first time at the latter game's halftime show. As it doubles down on live events programming and seeks to provide more than 280 million customers real-time material that was once the sole purview of traditional television networks, the games are a crucial test for the streaming behemoth. However, in the midst of the excitement, the company is questioned about its ability to webcast these events without experiencing any technological issues. The highly anticipated boxin...

Medicare’s $2,000 prescription drug cap expected to bring major relief to cancer patients

Under the new price cap on out-of-pocket payments under the Inflation Reduction Act, older persons on Medicare will spend no more than $2,000 annually on prescription medications as of January 1. According to experts, the shift is anticipated to significantly alleviate the financial burden on cancer patients, who sometimes find it difficult to pay for their treatments because cancer therapies are so expensive. Canonsburg, Pennsylvania resident Diana DiVito remembers being shocked when she received her first co-payment for the cancer medication Imbruvica in 2016. In 2005, the 83-year-old was identified as having chronic lymphocytic leukemia, a blood cancer that starts in the bone marrow. After receiving chemotherapy and other treatments, she experienced remission. She began using Imbruvica ...

Systane eye drops recalled for possible fungal contamination, FDA says

The Food and Drug Administration announced a voluntary recall of Systane brand eye drops due to potential fungus contamination. In response to a customer complaint "of foreign material observed inside a sealed single-use vial," the FDA announced the recall of one lot of Systane Lubricant Eye Drops Ultra PF. The substance was found to be "fungal in nature." Eye infections that "may be vision-threatening, and in very rare cases potentially life-threatening in immunocompromised patients," could result from the contamination, the announcement said. According to the FDA, Alcon Laboratories, the company that makes the eye drops, has not heard of any negative side effects from consumers. The 25-count on-the-go single vials containing the recalled eye drops have lot number 10101 and an expiration ...
