‘A sacred obligation’: How Harris is approaching certifying her own election loss to Trump

According to five people familiar with her thinking—two current Harris aides, two former Harris aides, and a White House official—Vice President Kamala Harris will be focused on ensuring a peaceful transfer of power and avoiding the deadly chaos that engulfed the Capitol exactly four years ago as she presides over a joint session of Congress on Monday to certify her own election loss to Donald Trump. "It is a sacred obligation that I will uphold, guided by love of country, loyalty to our Constitution, and my unwavering faith in the American people," Harris says in a taped video message about her job on Monday that was first acquired by NBC News. Trump falsely claimed that the election had been stolen from him during a rally in Washington, D.C., on January 6, 2021, and encouraged Vice Presi...

Martin O’Malley snags DNC chair endorsements from current and former Black members of Congress

As the race moves into the final run, four well-known members of the Congressional Black Caucus, both past and present, supported Martin O. Malley's quest to chair the Democratic National Committee on Monday. Rep. Bennie Thompson of Mississippi, the former chair of the House committee that looked into the Jan. 6 riots at the Capitol; Rep. Emmanuel Cleaver of Missouri; and Marcia Fudge of Ohio, who served as secretary of housing and urban development in the Biden administration and chair of the Congressional Black Caucus during her time in Congress, provided the new endorsements. Everyone is supporting O'Malley, including Lacy Johnson, a board member of the Congressional Black Caucus Institute. "Democracy is at a crossroads and we need a change agent now," the Black leaders wrote in a state...

Rudy Giuliani to resume testimony at contempt-of-court hearing in defamation case

Rudy Giuliani, Donald Trump's former attorney, will be asked further questions after being grilled during a contempt-of-court hearing last week for failing to turn over valuables to pay a $146 million defamation judgment against him. In contrast to Friday's court, Giuliani will testify virtually on Monday and answer questions from his counsel rather than the attorneys for Ruby Freeman and Wandrea Shaye Moss, the two former Georgia election workers he was found guilty of defaming. The question at hand is whether Giuliani should be found in contempt for refusing to turn over valuables, such as a New York Yankees jersey that Hall of Fame outfielder Joe DiMaggio signed. For not turning over the jersey and other artifacts meant to support their $146 million judgment against Giuliani, Freeman an...

Sushi chain pays $1.3 million for motorcycle-sized tuna at Tokyo auction

Tokyo At an annual fish auction in Tokyo, a bluefin tuna brought almost $1.3 million, the second-highest price since the event's inception in 1999, according to the auction's organizers. The Michelin-starred sushi chain operator Onodera Group and seafood distributor Yamayuki paid 207 million yen ($1,316,835) for the 608-pound bluefin tuna, which is roughly the size and weight of a motorcycle, during the new year's auction at Tokyo's major fish market, Toyosu market. The two businesses have won the auction five times in a row. Shinji Nagao, president of the Onodera Group, told reporters at the market immediately following the sale that the first tuna is said to bring good fortune. By consuming this tuna, we hope that everyone will have a prosperous year. A few months after the renowned T...

Wyo Jackson. As they ascended a mountain in western Wyoming, the group they were in caused a massive snowslide that killed one skier and injured another. About 20 miles east of Grand Teton National Park, in a remote location, the avalanche occurred on Saturday. According to Teton County Search and Rescue and the Bridger-Teton Avalanche Center, a massive slab of snow, about five feet thick, broke free and slid as the four-person group ascended a steep slope at an elevation of 10,400 feet, completely burying the victim and partially burying another skier. Just before noon, authorities were alerted to the mishap. Rescuers used skis to arrive at the scene about four hours after a helicopter attempted to arrive but was forced to turn back due to stormy conditions. According to Brent Blue, the...

Demi Moore takes home Golden Globe for ‘The Substance,’ her first major acting award

Demi Moore won a Golden Globe for best feature actress in a musical or comedy for her lead in the body-horror movie "The Substance." This was possibly the most unexpected Golden Globe win of the morning. Moore faced some formidable contenders in the category, including Cynthia Erivo in "Wicked" and Karla Sof a Gasc n in "Emilia P rez." The "Ghost" and "A Few Good Men" actress seemed astonished to win the prize, admitting that it was the first significant acting honor she had ever won in her illustrious career. Moore remembered in a stirring winning speech that thirty years ago, a producer had called her a "popcorn actress." "I implied that this was something I didn't permit to possess. that I was unable to receive recognition while making successful films. "I believed that and I bought in,...
