Mystery illness in Congo could be severe malaria, health officials say

The reason of scores of mysterious fatalities in the Democratic Republic of the Congo is being narrowed down by health professionals. Based on preliminary laboratory testing, the Africa Centers for Disease Control and Prevention warned Thursday that a severe strain of malaria is most likely to blame. For weeks, the condition was thought to be a mystery. The Africa CDC reports that it has affected 592 people and killed at least 37. Earlier, local officials told Reuters that more than 140 people had died. While they wait for test results, African health officials have been calling the illness Disease X. Lab testing of samples collected from 51 individuals indicate that a malaria outbreak may be the cause of the infections, the Africa CDC stated Thursday. Malnutrition and confirmed viral infe...

Lay’s Classic Potato Chips recalled over ‘life-threatening’ allergy risk

According to the Food and Drug Administration, Frito-Lay recalled one of its most well-liked potato chips because it included milk that wasn't disclosed on the label. The FDA said on Wednesday that it is recalling Lay's Classic Potato Chips in Oregon and Washington. Customers may identify the brand from its recognizable brilliant yellow bag. Since potatoes, vegetable oil, and salt are mentioned as ingredients in the chips, it's unclear where the milk contamination occurred. "Those with an allergy or severe sensitivity to milk run the risk of a serious or life-threatening allergic reaction if they consume the recalled product," the notice of recall stated. The 13-ounce bag bearing the manufacture codes 6462307xx or 6463307xx and the "Guaranteed Fresh" date of February 11, 2025, is the subje...

FDA says Lilly weight loss drug shortage is over after taking a second look

The Food and Drug Administration announced Thursday that it is upholding its previous ruling that the scarcity of tirzepatide, the active component of Eli Lilly's weight-loss and diabetic medications Zepbound and Mounjaro, has ended. Due to the ruling, the majority of compounding pharmacies will have to cease producing the drug's compounded forms within ninety days. The use of compounded tirzepatide has increased dramatically as consumers look for less expensive substitutes for name-brand medications. In essence, compounded drugs are copies created by a certified pharmacist and typically prescribed by a physician. Although pharmaceutical companies have strongly contested the validity of this practice, it is allowed for pharmacists to create compounded copies of brand-name medications that ...

UCLA student sues California doctors, says she was ‘fast-tracked’ into transgender surgery

A UCLA student is bringing a medical malpractice lawsuit against several California hospitals and healthcare providers, claiming she was misdiagnosed with gender dysphoria and then hurried onto a path of irreversibly harmful puberty blockers, cross-sex hormones, and surgery. In a lawsuit filed last week in Los Angeles County Superior Court, Kaya Clementine Breen, 20, claimed that she was sexually abused as a young child and that by the time she was eleven, she was struggling with the idea of becoming a woman and had started to think that life would be simpler if she were a boy. She told her then-school counselor about this, and the counselor informed her that she was transgender and called her parents to confirm this. According to the lawsuit, Breen's parents took her to the Center for Tra...

Republican in close N.C. Supreme Court race asks that court to throw out 60,000 ballots

The Republican who is only behind in the race for the Supreme Court of North Carolina has requested that the court invalidate 60,000 ballots from the election that was held last month. A week after losing a lawsuit before the North Carolina State Board of Elections in which he also attempted to have those ballots thrown out, Jefferson Griffin, a judge on the appeals court, was promoted to the state Supreme Court. Griffin is now only 734 votes behind Democratic Justice Allison Riggs. Griffin's campaign lawyers filed a lawsuit Wednesday night asking the state Supreme Court to reject the current results and prevent the Democratic-controlled elections board from counting nearly 60,000 ballots. On the Supreme Court of North Carolina, Republicans hold a 5-2 majority. Griffin's lawyers stated tha...

November home sales surged more than expected, boosted by lower mortgage rates

November saw a 4.8% increase in previously owned home sales over October, according to the National Association of Realtors. This resulted in a yearly rate of 4.15 million units, adjusted for season. Compared to November 2023, sales increased 6.1%. This is the biggest annual growth in three years and the third-highest pace of the year. Contracts were probably signed in September and October because this count is based on closings. October saw a sharp increase in mortgage rates after they had dropped to an 18-month low in September. Lawrence Yun, the NAR's top economist, stated that momentum in home sales is increasing. Due to the economy's ongoing job growth, rising housing inventory compared to a year ago, and customers adjusting to the new normal of mortgage rates between 6% and 7%, mor...
