Mr. Penny Pincher: The Cost of Adulthood

It's funny in life. When we are children, we look forward to the day when we will be able to make our own decisions without any help from our parents. When we come to terms with the fact that adulthood isn't what it seems, we long for the times when we were younger and had to choose between Taco Bell and Arby's. Being a grownup comes with a cost, and it's not always inexpensive. For the majority of us, the stress of our jobs, monthly payments, and major expenses like college or home ownership are all commonplace. All of these are a little more difficult than choosing between a Taco Supreme and a Gordita Crunch. Is everything bad? Obviously not. We can now make our own decisions and choose a route that is specific to our goals in life since we are no longer constrained by our parents. We mu...

Pakistan government mediators seek ceasefire as 68 killed in sectarian violence

Following days of fighting that have left at least 68 people dead and numerous others injured, government representatives met with tribal chiefs in northwest Pakistan on Sunday in an attempt to mediate a ceasefire between warring sectarian factions. At least 40 people, primarily Shiite Muslims, were killed when gunmen assaulted convoys of civilian vehicles on Thursday, sparking the fighting. Retaliatory attacks against Sunni citizens followed, and armed groups from both sides engaged in fierce combat. A land dispute in Kurram district, close to the Afghan border, has led to decades of tribal and sectarian conflict between armed Shiite and Sunni Muslims. According to Muhammad Ali Saif, the communications minister for Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province, which includes Kurram, a government delegatio...

Trump should fire DOJ employees who investigated his cases, GOP Sen. Eric Schmitt says

Sen. Eric Schmitt, R-Mo., made the suggestion on Sunday that firing any Justice Department employees who worked on cases including accusations against Trump should be one of President-elect Donald Trump's top objectives in his new administration. During an appearance on NBC News' "Meet the Press," Schmitt stated, "First and foremost, the people involved with this should be fired immediately." "And anybody part of this, this effort to keep President Trump off the ballot and to throw him in jail for the rest of his life because they didn't like his politics, and who continue to cast him as a quote, unquote threat to democracy, was wrong, and so we'll see where that goes," Schmitt continued. His comments coincide with special counsel Jack Smith's plans to wind down the cases against Trump and...

Child care cost as much as rent for many families at inflation’s peak, new data shows

According to recent Department of Labor data, many families have been essentially paying a second rent check to send their children to day care. Although it is well known that child care prices have severely strained households nationwide, the federal data demonstrates how sharply these costs increased from county to county during the greatest inflation in four decades. In 2022, the most recent year for which data is available, families' average spending for full-day care for each child ranged from $6,552 to as high as $15,600. According to the organization, the maximum level is several hundred dollars higher than the typical yearly rent for that year. Although incomes vary greatly across the nation, households generally spend between 9% and 16% of their yearly income on day care for each ...

Thanksgiving dinner is historically affordable this year

Thanksgiving dinner is more reasonably priced than it has been in years, even though you might not notice it by looking at the sticker pricing in the grocery aisles. According to a statewide poll of supermarket prices conducted by the American Farm Bureau Federation, which represents millions of U.S. farmers, the expected cost of this year's holiday feast is $58.08 for a 10-person gathering, or $5.81 per head. This is the lowest amount since 2021 and a 5% decrease from last year. However, when inflation is taken into account, the situation gets much better. With the exception of the 2020 outlier, the authors stated that this would be the least expensive Thanksgiving meal in the 39-year history of the AFBF Thanksgiving survey if your dollar had the same total purchasing power as a customer ...

Chess’ next move: The future looms over the game’s world championship, once again missing its biggest star

A teenage sensation from India will face a taciturn assassin from China in one of the largest sports events in the world, but the greatest of all time from Norway will not be present. This week marks the beginning of the 2024 World Chess Championship, which will pit the current champion Ding Liren of China against 18-year-old Gukesh Dommaraju of India. Even while it is still regarded as the game's main event, Magnus Carlsen of Norway, the five-time champion who chose not to defend his title in 2022, is conspicuously absent. Grandmaster David Howell, Carlsen's close friend and one of the official match commentators in Singapore, said this year's world championship is remarkable but still has a special place in the chess world. According to Howell, it has long been the only element that dist...

How the Trump administration and congressional Republicans may crack down on pro-Palestinian protesters

As Donald Trump returns to the White House, congressional Republicans and former Trump appointees have been preparing their response to the movement against Israel's war in Gaza for the past year. They warn that protest organizers, activists, and those who assist them in raising funds may be subject to a barrage of federal investigations and potential indictments. A glimpse of the federal statutes that a second Trump administration would employ when conducting investigations and possible prosecutions is given by an NBC News analysis of congressional hearings and letters as well as lawsuits brought by groups headed by former Trump officials. Several legal actions are most likely to be taken after Trump comes to Washington, based on what has been pushed thus far. One would be deporting inter...
