Mukhtar Babayev, the president of COP29, brought two addresses to the platform at the Baku climate summit's concluding session on Sunday morning in an attempt to finalize a grueling deal on global climate finance. According to two sources familiar with the situation who spoke to Reuters on condition of anonymity, one was designed around the prospect of a summit-collapsing deadlock, while the other was centered around a hoped-for compromise being made. According to a source in the COP29 presidency who spoke to Reuters, they prepared multiple drafts of the final statement for various scenarios, but they went through difficult talks right up until the last minute to guarantee what was dubbed the Baku Breakthrough. Menendez brothers’ bid to be freed: Where does their resentencing effort stand?

After Los Angeles County's top prosecutor was fired earlier this month and suggested a fresh sentencing that would allow the brothers' release, Erik and Lyle Menendez's attempts to shorten their life sentences without the possibility of parole have been put on hold. After a court decided on Monday that a resentencing hearing scheduled for December 11 should be postponed in part to allow the county's new district attorney to review the case, that uncertainty will persist for the time being. Though it's uncertain if they would speak, the brothers were supposed to attend the hearing virtually. The siblings were sentenced to 35 years in prison for the August 20, 1989, shotgun killings of their parents, Jos and Kitty Menendez, in their Beverly Hills residence. These included conspiring to impede justice, providing false statements, and willfully keeping national defense information. The case was dismissed by a Florida judge, but Smith's office had appealed. In August 2023, Trump was charged separately with four felonies for his attempt to overturn the results of the 2020 el...
