HONG KONG — Eight people were killed and 17 more were injured in a knife attack at a school in eastern China on Saturday evening, local police said, in the same week the country saw its deadliest mass killing in almost a decade . The investigation is underway, along with the treatment of the injured, the Yixing Public Security Bureau said in a statement late Saturday night. Are Black Friday deals worth waiting for? Here’s what to expect this year

Typically, the five days beginning Thanksgiving Day and ending Cyber Monday are some of the busiest shopping days of the year. This year, the number of people shopping in stores and online during that period could hit a new record, according to the National Retail Federation’s annual survey . But consumers trying to make the most of the Black Friday sales may not be getting the best prices of the season. According to WalletHub’s 2023 Best Things to Buy on Black Friday report, 35% of items at major retailers offered no savings compared with their pre-Black Friday prices. The site compared Black Friday advertisements against prices on Amazon earlier that fall. “Some Black Friday deals are misleading as retailers may inflate original prices to make a de...

Workplace flexibility is helping Americans take longer trips this holiday season, report finds

Americans are determined to travel this holiday season — and certain workarounds are helping them take those trips. The ability to work remotely is a major leg up when planning out itineraries. About 49% of employed travelers are “laptop luggers” — those who plan to work at some point on their holiday vacation — up from 34% last year, according to the Deloitte holiday travel survey. This flexibility allows workers to take trips they might not otherwise, or stretch their trips for longer, according to the survey. No touchdown, no problem: Steelers beat Super Bowl contender by solving one of NFL’s toughest problems

With his team needing a two-point conversion to tie and only one minute remaining in Baltimore’s Week 11 matchup in Pittsburgh, Ravens quarterback Lamar Jackson ran to his left Sunday, looking for either a receiver or a running lane. Neither immediately opened, yet the play was anything but over; Jackson, one of the league’s most elusive playmakers, has slipped a defense’s apparent straitjacket many times before on the way to becoming the NFL’s two-time Most Valuable Player. But Sunday, all Jackson could do before he ran out of room toward the sideline was throw a desperate heave to no one in particular, which hit the ground. The play was a designed quarterback run, Jackson told reporters . It wasn’t a one-play exception. By containing Jackson and his teammates all game, Pi...

The Bills ended the Chiefs’ undefeated season, but now they need to beat them in the playoffs

The Buffalo Bills ended the Kansas City Chiefs’ bid at an undefeated season Sunday, winning 30-21 in a battle of AFC contenders. Nursing a tenuous 23-21 lead late in the fourth quarter, Bills quarterback Josh Allen led a 12-play, 70-yard drive culminating in a 26-yard touchdown run by Allen on fourth down that effectively put the game away. On the Chiefs’ next drive, Patrick Mahomes was intercepted with a little over a minute to go, and Buffalo knelt out the clock. The Bills’ offense was the story of the game. Kansas City entered Sunday’s game fifth in scoring defense, allowing only 17.9 points per game. The Chiefs also hadn’t allowed a team to score 30 points since the Philadelphia Eagles did in Super Bowl 57 in February 2023. Buffalo put an end to that, however, thanks to ...

Trump defense secretary pick Pete Hegseth denies sexual assault allegation, acknowledges payment to accuser

Former Fox News host Pete Hegseth’s attorney on Sunday confirmed to NBC News that Hegseth, whom President-elect Donald Trump has named as his candidate for defense secretary, paid a woman an undisclosed amount after she accused him of sexual assault. “In 2023, Hegseth paid the complainant as part of a civil confidential settlement agreement and maintains his innocence,” Timothy Parlatore, Hegseth’s attorney, said in a statement. He also denied that the encounter between Hegseth and an unnamed woman, which she alleges happened in 2017, was sexual assault. Parlatore’s statement comes after The Washington Post on Saturday reported that a friend of Hegseth ’ s accuser sent a memo to the Trump transition team detailing the allegations. NBC News has not independently...

Elon Musk’s X Corp. files notice in Alex Jones’ Infowars bankruptcy case

Attorneys for X Corp., the firm established by Elon Musk to take over Twitter, filed a notice of appearance on Thursday in the bankruptcy case of Alex Jones and his Infowars platform. The new owners of satirical news site The Onion had been declared the successful bidders for Jones ’ controversial platform , alongside families of the Sandy Hook massacre victims. But this week, the Texas bankruptcy judge overhearing the case voiced concerns about the transparency of the auction process and called for a new hearing to discuss those potential issues. “Nobody should feel comfortable with the results of the auction,” Judge Christopher M. UFC champ Jon Jones, 49ers star Nick Bosa and other athletes celebrate with ‘Trump Dance’

A month after Donald Trump danced spontaneously at a political rally, the moves have made their way to sporting events around the country. After two attendees fainted at an Oct. 15 rally in Pennsylvania, Trump ended his remarks, saying: “Let’s just listen to music. Who the hell wants to hear questions?” He then danced for roughly 40 minutes, according to reporters at the rally. The moves remained solely in the world of politics as an unexpected moment in the run-up to the election until recently, after Trump defeated Vice President Kamala Harris to return for his second stint in office. San Francisco 49ers defensive end Nick Bosa celebrated a sack with teammates in a game at Tampa Bay on Nov. 10. Asked what inspired the dance, Bosa told reporters, “I think you know the answer to that...

Kari Lake and Arizona county election official reach settlement in defamation case

A defamation case against Kari Lake brought by Maricopa County, Arizona, Recorder Stephen Richer has been settled, representatives for both parties confirmed Sunday to NBC News. Richer, a Republican, filed a claim in June 2023 saying Lake falsely accused him of "intentionally sabotaging the election" after she lost the 2022 Arizona governor's race. Richer's office is tasked with maintaining voter files and works with Maricopa County Elections to administer elections. Richer sought unspecified nominal, compensatory and punitive damages. "As a result of Defendants’ knowing and malicious falsehoods, Richer and his family have been the target of threats of violence, and even death, and have had their lives turned upside down," Richer's team said in the claim last year, whic...
