U.S. transfers 11 Guantanamo detainees to Yemen after more than two decades without charge

Washington After detaining 11 Yemenis without prosecution at the U.S. naval facility in Guantanamo Bay, Cuba, for more than 20 years, the Pentagon announced on Monday that it has transferred them to Oman this week. The transfer was the most recent and significant move made by the Biden administration in its last weeks to remove the last remaining detainees who had never been charged with a crime from Guantanamo. With the most recent disclosure, there are now 15 men in all who are being held at Guantanamo. That is the fewest since the administration of President George W. Bush converted Guantanamo into a prison facility for the primarily Muslim detainees arrested worldwide in what the United States referred to as its "war on terror" in 2002. The September 11, 2001, al-Qaida attacks were ...

Japanese steelmaker vows not to give up on buying U.S. Steel

Even after President Joe Biden banned the $15 billion proposal last week due to national security concerns, Tokyo, the largest steelmaker in Japan, announced on Tuesday that it will not abandon its efforts to acquire U.S. Steel. Concerned that it would damage U.S. relations with a crucial diplomatic and commercial ally in Asia—the two nations are each other's largest foreign investors—the blockage of the proposed agreement by Nippon Steel clouded outgoing Secretary of State Anthony Blinken's final trip to Japan. The chairman and CEO of Nippon Steel, the fourth-largest steelmaker in the world, Eiji Hashimoto, stated that there was no need or motive to abandon the proposal. In Tokyo, he told reporters, "This is not just the most important matter for our company's business strategy." I since...

North Korea says it tested hypersonic intermediate-range missile aimed at remote Pacific targets

South Korea's SEOULNorth Korean leader Kim Jong Un promised to increase his arsenal of nuclear-capable weapons to counter adversaries, and the country announced Tuesday that its most recent test was a new hypersonic intermediate-range missile intended to hit distant targets in the Pacific. A day after South Korea's military reported detecting North Korea shoot a missile that traveled 685 kilometers before landing in waters between the Korean Peninsula and Japan, North Korean official media reported the same thing. The launch followed a turbulent year of weapons testing and took place only weeks before Donald Trump takes office again. As the two nations align over the conflict in Ukraine, there are worries that North Korea's military capabilities could advance further through technology tra...

If and when Greenland joins our country, the people will greatly profit from this amazing place. We shall adore it and keep it safe from the harsh outside world. Alongside the message was a video clip of someone claiming that if he could give Trump any advice, he would advise him to "Buy Greenland." Trump seeks to block ‘imminent’ release of special counsel Jack Smith’s report

The release of a final report by special counsel Jack Smith that also handles the election meddling case was attempted to be blocked Monday by President-elect Donald Trump and his erstwhile co-defendants in the Florida classified papers case. Trump's two lawsuits have been dropped. In a motion filed Monday evening, the attorneys for defendants Walt Nauta and Carlos De Oliveira requested that U.S. District Judge Aileen Cannon prevent Smith, the case's prosecutor, from releasing his findings. The judge's earlier decision that Smith's appointment was unconstitutional was cited. In order to achieve a single goal—convincing the public that everyone Smith charged is guilty of the crimes charged—the Final Report is expected to be biased and one-sided, relying almost entirely on evidence that was ...

Trump seeks to block ‘imminent’ release of special counsel Jack Smith’s report

On Monday, President-elect Donald Trump and his former co-defendants in the Florida classified papers case began an attempt to prevent the publication of special counsel Jack Smith's final report. In order to achieve a single goal—convincing the public that everyone Smith charged is guilty of the crimes charged—the Final Report is expected to be biased and one-sided, relying almost entirely on evidence that was presented to a grand jury and that was protected by all necessary safeguards. Smith on...

6 arrested after man was lured to campus, beaten in TikTok-inspired attack, police say

Authorities in Massachusetts alleged that six college students lured an active duty service member they falsely accused of being a sexual predator to their campus, where he was attacked and chased by over two dozen people. According to a statement of facts in the case, one of the accused students told police that the plot was based on To Catch a Predator, a cancelled NBC show that, over the course of its three seasons, sought to catch adults trying to prey on children by using undercover cameras and decoys that looked like underage dates. According to the facts document, 19-year-old student Easton Randall states that "catch a predator" is a popular trend on TikTok right now. Last month, authorities in Mount Prospect, northwest of Chicago, prosecuted eleven Illinois teenagers in a similar i...

Nicki Minaj accused of assaulting manager in lawsuit

While Nicki Minaj was on tour in Detroit, her former manager has accused the rap artist of repeatedly slapping and berating him. Minaj is charged with assault, violence, and deliberate emotional distress in the case, which was submitted to the Los Angeles County Superior Court on Friday. Pink Personality Inc., her business, is also listed as a defendant. A request for comment on Monday was not immediately answered by Minaj's lawyer.
