Trump seeks stay of sentencing in hush money case

In a court petition released on Monday, President-elect Donald Trump is requesting a delay of his Friday sentencing in the hush money case. Trump's lawyers claimed in a file with Judge Juan Merchandated on Sunday that the Court should postpone all further dates in the case until President Trump's immunity appeals are totally and completely decided, and that the Court should cancel the sentencing hearing that was set for January 10, 2025. In a decision last week, Merchan rejected Trump's attempt to have the case dismissed and mandated that his sentencing on 34 felony charges of fabricating business records take place this week, just in time for his inauguration. Trump is appealing those rulings to the state Appellate Division later today, according to the document, and is therefore entitled...

U.S. Steel sues Biden administration, union boss after president blocks acquisition deal

Following the president's announcement that he was obstructing a potential sale for the venerable American producer, U.S. Steel and the Japanese company that had attempted to purchase it are suing the Biden administration. When President Joe Biden declared on Friday that he would not permit the transaction to proceed, U.S. Steel and Japan's Nippon Steel said in a statement on Monday that Biden "ignored the rule of law" to curry favor with United Steelworkers, the union that represents many of U.S. Steel's employees. In addition, U.S. Steel and Nippon announced that they were suing David McCall, the union president, and Cleveland-Cliffs, the leader of a competing mining company in Ohio, alleging that they had unlawfully conspired to thwart the deal. A $14 billion offer by Nippon Steel to ac...

Disney to combine its Hulu+ Live TV with streamer Fubo

The firms announced on Monday that they will merge two online TV bundles, Disney sHulu+ Live TV and Fubo. Disney will acquire a 70% ownership position in the publicly traded Fubo company, making it the majority owner of the resulting business. Both Fubo and Hulu+ Live TV are streaming services that offer linear TV networks and resemble the classic cable TV bundle. There are 6.2 million subscribers to all of the streaming services combined. The contract excludes Hulu, a streaming service that competes with Netflix and is well-known for producing original programs like Only Murders in the Building and The Handmaid's Tale. A significant aspect of the agreement is the settlement of a lawsuit between Fubo and Disney concerning Venu, the proposed sports streaming service from Disney, Fox, and Wa...

Israeli soldiers face risk of arrest abroad for alleged war crimes after serving in Gaza

Israel's leaders may not be the only ones who should be cautious about going overseas. Due to accusations of war crimes in Israel's attack on the beleaguered Palestinian enclave, troops who have served in Gaza now seem to be at an increased risk of being arrested themselves. One soldier on vacation in Brazil earlier this month fled the South American nation after a judge ordered federal police to conduct an investigation in response to a lawsuit accusing the soldier of war crimes in Gaza. The incident has caused outrage in Israel and praise overseas. After what it described as anti-Israel groups demanded an investigation last week, Israel's Foreign Ministry assisted the former soldier in leaving Brazil on a commercial airline, the ministry said in a statement shared with NBC News on Monday...

Pope Francis names the first woman to head a major Vatican office

On Monday, Pope Francison appointed Sister Simona Brambilla, an Italian nun, as the prefect of the department in charge of overseeing all of the Catholic Church's religious orders, making her the first woman to hold a senior position at the Vatican. Francis wants to offer women more leadership responsibilities in running the church, and this appointment is a significant step toward that goal. No woman has ever been appointed prefect of a dicastery or congregation of the Holy See Curia, the main body that governs the Catholic Church, although women have been ranked second in various Vatican positions. Vatican Media made a headline about Brambilla's appointment, confirming that it was historic. The first female prefect at the Vatican is Sister Simona Brambilla. Francis concurrently appointe...

Austria’s far-right may lead a government for first time since World War Two

In what may be the first far-right-led administration in Austria since World War Two, Austrian President Alexander Van der Bellen has requested the head of the far-right Freedom Party (FP) to create a new ruling coalition. At a press conference following the two leaders' Monday meeting in Vienna, Van der Bellen stated that FP head Herbert Kickl is confident in his ability to identify workable solutions within the parameters of government negotiations and that he intends to carry out this duty. The announcement marks a significant shift in the course of Austrian parliamentarians' attempts to create a government. On Saturday, current Chancellor Karl Nehammer resigned, and the ruling conservatives had a crisis conference on Sunday. Van der Bellen had few options after the meeting, which was i...
