Paris’ Notre Dame celebrates first Sunday Mass since fire five years ago

PARIS Light streamed through restored stained glass windows, the choir’s voices reverberated off walls scoured for scorch marks, and notes exploded from the painstakingly cleaned grand organ.

To celebrate the cathedral’s restoration and see the altar consecrated, hundreds of people gathered for Notre Dame’s first Sunday Mass since a fire destroyed the cherished monument five years ago.

First lady Brigitte Macron and French President Emmanuel Macron, who assisted in coordinating the cathedral’s formal reopening on Saturday in a night of festivities and ceremony, attended the Mass, which was presided over by Archbishop of Paris Laurent Ulrich.
