Patrick Mahomes vs. Tom Brady: Why the Chiefs QB is on pace to be the GOAT

Patrick Mahomes, the quarterback for the Kansas City Chiefs, will have the chance to accomplish something that no quarterback in NFL history has done: win three consecutive Super Bowls when he hits the field on Sunday in Super Bowl LIX.

Since no club had previously won five Super Bowls in a six-year stretch, the Chiefs’ participation in the event is a record in and of itself.

Although Kansas City has had a number of important players during this run, like defensive tackle Chris Jones, tight end Travis Kelce, and head coach Andy Reid, to mention a few, Mahomes is the main driver of the team’s success.

Mahomes was selected in the 2017 NFL Draft by the Chiefs, who used him as their starting quarterback the following season. Mahomes won MVP that season after throwing 50 touchdowns. In addition to winning three Super Bowl MVP awards and two MVP awards since joining the league, Mahomes has started every season and advanced to at least the AFC championship game.

In 20 postseason games, Mahomes has only lost three times, and both of those losses have come against quarterback Tom Brady of the Tampa Bay Bucs and the New England Patriots, who are widely regarded as the greatest of all time.

Brady defeated Mahomes twice: once with the Patriots in the 2018 AFC title game and once with the Buccaneers in Super Bowl LV.

It seemed like it would take a very long time for any player to match Brady’s record seven Super Bowl titles when he retired. Ironically, Brady will be announcing Sunday’s game for Fox. Despite this, Mahomes has the potential to surpass Brady in terms of titles throughout the first eight seasons of his career.

Compare the following Mahomes and Brady stats from their first eight seasons:

As you can see, Mahomes is clearly superior to Brady in almost every quarterback-related statistical area. While it also shows how powerful and well-rounded Mahomes has been thus far, some of that may be ascribed to the eras each quarterback spent their first eight seasons in.

Interestingly, Sunday’s game is not included in these metrics, thus Mahomes has a real potential to surpass Brady’s Super Bowl pace. Brady will have three championships in his first eight seasons, while Mahomes will have four if the Chiefs win Super Bowl LIX.

Mahomes might not become the greatest of all time with just one more victory. But as he begins the next eight years of his career, Mahomes’ case for the championship is looking good, regardless of the outcome on Sunday.
