Pet food recalled over bird flu contamination after cat dies

Following a cat’s death from avian flu, which Oregon officials linked to the cat’s tainted food, a voluntary recall was ordered for a line of raw and frozen pet food.

Northwest Naturals notified customers on Tuesday that if the sell-by date of their Feline Turkey Recipe raw frozen pet food falls between May 21, 2026, and June 23, 2026, they should discard it. The batch, which was distributed throughout the United States, tested positive for highly pathogenic avian influenza (HPAI), also referred to as bird flu, according to the company’s website.

Customers can get information about a refund by calling 866-637-1872.

Following testing conducted by its lab and a veterinary diagnostic laboratory at Oregon State University, the Oregon Agriculture Department also released a notice regarding the recall.

The department was certain that the Northwest Naturals food was the source of the cat’s avian flu, according to State Veterinarian Dr. Ryan Scholz.

“This cat was strictly an indoor cat; it was not exposed to the virus in its environment, and results from the genome sequencing confirmed that the virus recovered from the raw pet food and infected cat were exact matches to each other,” he stated.

State officials are keeping an eye on household members for signs of bird flu, but as of Tuesday, no human cases had been found. Raw meat products should not be consumed by humans or their pets, according to the state Agriculture Department.

Although dozens of cases have been reported this year, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention last week confirmed the first serious human case of the most recent bird flu outbreak, H5N1, in the United States. According to the EPA, an individual in Louisiana was admitted to the hospital after possibly being exposed by a backyard flock.
