Photos: Flames engulf Southern California as crews battle to control Palisades Fire

A brush fire burst in the Pacific Palisades neighborhood of Los Angeles on Tuesday, forcing tens of thousands of Southern Californians to evacuate their homes.

The Palisades Fire began as a brush fire on Tuesday morning and spread to more over 1,200 acres by Tuesday afternoon, driven by strong Santa Ana winds and dry conditions.

Smoke pillars towered over the seaside area in dramatic photos. People were caught escaping the area on foot as flames were observed spreading toward residences.

After her escape, one local told NBC Los Angeles that the scene was horrific.

According to Los Angeles Fire Chief Kristin M. Crowley, around 30,000 households are under evacuation orders, and over 10,000 homes are under danger, she told reporters Tuesday.
