Raiders fire head coach Antonio Pierce after one season in full-time role

After just one season, the Las Vegas Raiders announced on Tuesday that they had sacked head coach Antonio Pierce.

In his one season as the Raiders’ full-time head coach, Pierce, 46, had a 4-13 record. In 2023, he was Las Vegas’ temporary head coach, leading the team to a 5-4 record following Josh McDaniels’ dismissal.

The team released a statement saying, “We appreciate Antonio’s leadership, first as an interim head coach and this past season as the head coach.” “Antonio has strong Silver and Black ties and was raised as a Raiders supporter. His ability to rekindle the Raider spirit across the entire organization is something we appreciate. We hope the future holds nothing but the best for Antonio and his family.

In January of last year, Pierce was appointed to head coach by the Raiders. Prior to that, beginning in 2022, he served as the team’s linebackers coach.

Pierce began his coaching career as a high school coach at Long Beach Polytechnic in southern California after playing linebacker for nine seasons in the NFL and won a Super Bowl with the New York Giants following the 2007 season.

Pierce coached at Arizona State from 2018 to 2021 before joining Las Vegas, holding a variety of positions, including defensive coordinator and linebackers coach. During an NCAA inquiry into a recruiting rule infraction, he resigned prior to the 2022 season.

Following their tumultuous 2021 season, when head coach Jon Gruden resigned midseason after racist, misogynistic, and homophobic emails he wrote were made public as part of an investigation into the workplace culture of the then-Washington Football Team, the Raiders have only made the playoffs once since moving from Oakland to Las Vegas.

Since the 2021 season began, Las Vegas has had five head coaches, including interim ones.

In the next NFL draft, the Raiders will pick sixth overall.
