Rudy Giuliani, the former attorney for Donald Trump, was answering additional questions in court on Monday after being grilled during a contempt-of-court hearing last week for failing to turn over valuables to pay a $146 million defamation judgment against him.
In contrast to Friday’s hearing, Giuliani is testifying virtually and answering questions from his counsel rather than the attorneys for Ruby Freeman and Wandrea Shaye Moss, the two former Georgia election workers he was found guilty of defaming.
Giuliani told his attorney Joseph Cammarata that he had made an effort to follow the court’s directives in the case and that his former lawyer was to responsible for any previous infractions. He also bemoaned the trouble he has had managing his numerous court actions, which include two criminal proceedings and two additional defamation suits pertaining to his efforts to reverse the 2020 election results.
“Some days it is completely impossible because there are conflicting demands for material and appearances on the same day,” added Giuliani.
He added that he had found the title to his Mercedes-Benz convertible and the lease for his multimillion-dollar Manhattan apartment, two important documents that Freeman and Moss had been awaiting.
The question of whether Giuliani should be held in contempt for disobeying court orders to turn over valuables, such as a New York Yankees jersey signed by Hall of Fame outfielder Joe DiMaggio, is being considered by U.S. District Judge Lewis Liman.
Giuliani’s failure to turn up the jersey and other items meant to support their $146 million judgment against him has led Freeman and Moss to petition the judge to declare him in civil contempt.
The amount was given to the couple in their defamation case against Giuliani, who they said had disseminated false information regarding Trump’s 2020 election defeat, which led to a barrage of racial and violent threats directed at them.
After Giuliani regularly missed deadlines to turn up assets and financial data, their lawyers had pleaded with the judge in a court filing to impose the proper consequences to encourage him to comply with court orders.
The DiMaggio jersey was reported missing on Friday, and Giuliani refuted a claim made by his friend Monsignor Alan Placa that he had seen it framed on his Palm Peach, Florida, property in the previous two years.
Giuliani stated on Monday that he is still looking for the jersey. “I don’t know where it is, and it is hard to recreate who took it, and I am personally conducting my own investigation about this,” he stated.
On Friday, Giuliani denied concealing additional Yankees memorabilia, claiming he wasn’t concealing a signed photo of Hall of Famer Reggie Jackson, which the election worker’s lawyer claimed was listed as an asset in a bankruptcy filing.
Freeman and Moss’s attorneys have contended that Giuliani has shown a pattern of deliberate disregard for the Court’s Turnover Orders, pointing to his refusal to turn over the title document for his Mercedes, which once belonged to Hollywood star Lauren Bacall, the cash in his bank account, and the proprietary lease and co-op shares to the estimated $6 million Manhattan apartment.
This week, Giulianii is also facing a second contempt case in Washington, D.C., regarding whether he should be punished for continuing to disparage Freeman and Moss on his America’s Mayor Live webcast, in violation of a court order.
