Saints QB Derek Carr could miss rest of season with hand fracture

NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport and Tom Pelissero have reported that Derek Carr, the quarterback for the New Orleans Saints, would likely miss several weeks due to a fractured non-throwing hand.

Carr sustained the injury during Sunday’s Saints’ 14–11 victory over the New York Giants in the fourth quarter. He tried to brace his fall with his left hand after crashing into a teammate after diving forward for a first down.

Carr might miss the remainder of the season because New Orleans just has four games left on their schedule.

But at his press conference on Monday, Saints head coach Darren Rizzi denied the report.

Rizzi stated, “I’ve already seen some reports out there that are a little bit false.” I don’t think it will be a [injured reserve] issue as it stands right now.

Later on, he added: It seems to be non-surgical right now. This will continue to happen on a daily basis because if it were surgical, we would be having a different discourse.

Carr is included in the concussion protocol, according to the New Orleans coach.

Carr had to exit the game early on Sunday for the second time this season because of an injury. He missed the team’s next three games after injuring his oblique during a Week 5 loss to the Kansas City Chiefs.

Carr has passed for 2,145 yards, 15 touchdowns, and five interceptions in 10 games this season. Carr’s passer rating of 101.0 is his highest since the 2020 season, when he was a member of the Las Vegas Raiders.

Rookie quarterback Spencer Rattler started the three games that Carr missed, even though backup Jake Haener took over in the two games that he left early. Rattler threw for 571 yards, one touchdown, and two interceptions in those three games.

The Saints’ record improved to 5-8 with their victory over the Giants. This season, New Orleans is 0-3 under Rattler and 5-5 when Carr begins.

The Saints are 3-1 since Rizzi took over as interim head coach on November 4. After a seven-game losing streak in Week 9, New Orleans fired Dennis Allen.

Carr is in his second season with the Saints after being selected by the Raiders in the second round of the 2014 NFL Draft. In March 2023, Carr agreed to a four-year, $150 million contract and a $100 million guarantee with New Orleans.
