On Monday, a South Carolina woman who was accused of killing the bride and gravely hurting the groom on their wedding day by driving intoxicated into a newlywed couple’s golf cart was given a 25-year jail sentence.
In a courtroom in Charleston, a judge handed down the punishment after 27-year-old Jamie Komoroski entered a guilty plea to all charges related to the April 28, 2023, collision that killed 34-year-old Samantha Miller and injured Aric Hutchinson’s brain and bones just hours after their marriage.
Komoroski was accused of three charges of felony DUI and reckless homicide.
Komoroski was given a 25-year term by Circuit Court Judge Deadra L. Jefferson for felony DUI causing death. For her other offenses, she received sentences of 10 and 15 years, but she will serve them concurrently.
After Komoroski entered a guilty plea, Samantha Miller’s mother, Lisa Miller, told the court, “She doesn’t get to come back to life in 10 years, 25 years,” according to Charleston’s NBC affiliate WCBD. It’s a lifetime.
Komoroski said she was “hopelessly” hooked to alcohol at the time of the incident and expressed regret for what she described as her “thoughtless” conduct.
She once declared, “I take full responsibility for my actions,” as she gazed at the victim’s loved ones. “I’m hoping you’ll be able to forgive me someday. I am aware that forgiveness needs to be earned.
At around 10 p.m., Komoroski, traveling at 65 mph, crashed into the rear of the smaller golf cart carrying the newlyweds and two guests as they were making their way to a Folly Beach rental home following their wedding reception.
According to WCBD, the golf cart was moving at 25 mph when everyone inside was ejected.
Samantha Miller was declared deceased at the scene due to blunt force injuries.
