South Korean lawmakers seek president’s impeachment after 6-hour martial law declaration

South Korea’s SEOUL After President Yoon Suk Yeolon startled the East Asian democracy by proclaiming martial law and then lifting it hours later under tremendous pressure, opposition MPs in South Korea sought to impeach him on Wednesday.

On Wednesday afternoon local time, six opposition parties—led by the Democratic Party, which controls the parliament—submitted articles of impeachment against Yoon in a swift response to what the Democratic Party claimed was an illegal and unconstitutional declaration of martial law by the Yoon administration.

As early as Friday or Saturday, members of the unicameral legislature might vote on the Yoon impeachment resolution, which needs a two-thirds majority vote to pass. After then, a trial would be held by the Constitutional Court to decide whether to approve the impeachment move.

Later, the Democratic Party declared that it has also filed articles of impeachment against Kim Yong-hyun, the defense minister. Kim stated that I am solely responsible for the declaration of martial law and that he had resigned.
