Through music and fellowship, St. Luke’s Episcopal Church promotes unity and the sharing of Latin American customs by hosting two bilingual festivals in December (WNY News Now).
Jamestown, New York A lot of music has been written about world peace and human kindness as the holidays draw near. Two bilingual (English-Spanish) events are being held by St. Luke’s Episcopal Church this December, offering chances for people to experience much-needed peace and goodwill among themselves via celebration and song. These gatherings, which are scheduled for December 13 and 14, are intended to honor and disseminate the rich cultural and musical traditions of Latin America:
Las Posadas Celebration Friday, December 13th at 6:30 PM
A traditional Latin American celebration known as Las Posadas, or the Inns, reenacts Mary and Joseph’s trip as they seek refuge before to the birth of Jesus. As participants follow Mary and Joseph on their symbolic quest for a place to stay, there is a procession, prayers, and music. In keeping with the spirit of hospitality and community, the remembrance ends with a happy party complete with food, music, and a pi ata. If the weather permits, attendees should dress warmly and meet at St. Luke’s at 6:30 p.m. for an outdoor procession that will include music and prayers before moving inside for food and celebrations.
Latin American Worship Music Workshop Saturday, December 14th at 1:00 PM
A Latin American Worship Music Workshop is scheduled for the following day at 1:00 PM in the chapel at St. Luke’s. Participants will get the chance to learn about and enjoy Latin American religious music during this engaging event. Regardless of musical ability or Spanish language skills, anyone can participate in the workshop, which aims to establish a friendly environment for music education and community involvement. The Rev. Yuriria (Yuri) Rodriguez, a native Costa Rican priest, musician, artist, and educator, will serve as the leader of both events.
“My work focuses on using music to support diverse communities in their spiritual journeys, celebrating the presence of God in all cultures and affirming their identities,” Rodriguez adds. She has been leading and singing Latin American and sacred choirs in the US for more than 20 years. She is currently employed at the Church of the Nativity in Lawrence, Indiana, as a priest. “Whether it’s the liminal spaces between English and Spanish, Latino and US cultures, or tacos and BBQ,” Rodriguez continues, “I am passionate about bridging the spaces between cultures, languages, and food.”
These programs are being held by St. Luke’s in collaboration with the New Neighbors Coalition, a grassroots local group dedicated to embracing immigrants in Jamestown. The public is welcome to attend both free events.
