With the 82nd Golden Globe Awards, a less formal substitute for the Oscars that honor accomplishments in both film and television, Hollywood awards season officially begins on Sunday.
Here’s what to anticipate from a program that claims to be Hollywood’s Party of the Year.
How to watch
The Globes will be shown live on CBS beginning at 8 p.m. ET on Sunday at the Beverly Hilton Hotel. In the United States, the telecast will be streamed on the Paramount+ platform. (CBS replaced NBC by acquiring the Globes’ broadcast rights in November 2023.)
Updates will also be live-blogged by NBC News employees on NBCNews.com on Sunday.
Who is hosting?
Nikki Glaser, a Grammy and Emmy-nominated stand-up comedian, will serve as the Globes’ first emcee. Her solo hosting of the ceremony makes her the first female host. Tina Fey and Amy Poehler have hosted together four times in recent years, and Sandra Oh and Andy Samberg divided hosting responsibilities in 2019.
Glaser stated in an interview with the Globes’ official website that she was thrilled about the challenge but that being the show’s main act was frightening.
The space is well-lit, which isn’t good for comedy, and there are many people I look up to, which isn’t good for comedy either. “You can’t do retakes because it’s live,” Glaser stated. I find it exciting that the level of difficulty is so high.
Glaser just finished an extremely public year. In May, Nikki Glaser’s second HBO stand-up show, Someday You’ll Die, made its premiere. She also had an appearance in The Roast of Tom Brady on Netflix.
What are the film front-runners?
In contrast to the Academy Awards, the Globes divide the best film award into two categories: musical/comedy and drama. With six candidates in each race, this strategy enables voters to identify a greater variety of film ideas.
The Brutalist, an epic tale of the postwar immigrant experience, and Conclave, a thriller about the top-secret struggle for the papacy, are the drama films with the best chances, according to the editors of Gold Derby, an awards prediction website. A Complete Unknown, Dune: Part Two, Nickel Boys, and September 5 are the other drama candidates.
According to Gold Derby editors, the chances favor Wicked, an adaption of the well-known Broadway musical, and Anora, a bizarre picture of a Brooklyn sex worker, in the musical/comedy category. Challengers, Emilia Prez, A Real Pain, and The Substance are the other candidates.
NBCUniversal, the parent company of NBC News, released both Conclave and Wicked.
Despite Gold Derby expectations, Emilia Prez, a genre-busting song-and-dance extravaganza about a Mexican drug gang lord who has gender-affirming surgery and tries to start over as an anti-violence humanitarian, is the movie that enters the evening with the most nominations. The Netflix-distributed film received ten nominations.
What about blockbusters?
Last year, the Globes’ organizing committee included a new category: Cinematic and Box Office Achievement. Voters can use this option to identify films that have received widespread support from audiences around the world (i.e., ticket sales); Barbie won last year.
This year, eight popular films are up for grabs: Beetlejuice, Alien: Romulus, Beetlejuice, Twisters, Wicked, Gladiator II, Deadpool & Wolverine, Inside Out 2, and The Wild Robot.
The two highest-grossing films of 2024 were Deadpool & Wolverine and Inside Out 2, both of which brought in over $600 million at the US box office. However, don’t be shocked if Wicked, the third-highest earning film, wins the prize.
What are the television front-runners?
Globes voters acknowledge TV success as well. Sh Gun, a story set in feudal Japan, has the greatest odds in the drama series race, according to Gold Derby. (The popular show took home the same award at the most recent Emmys.) The Diplomat, Mr. and Mrs. Smith, Slow Horses, Squid Game, and The Day of the Jackal are the other nominees in the drama series category.
After winning the same trophy at the most recent Emmys, Hacks seems to be gaining traction in the comedy series category. Abbott Elementary, The Bear, The Gentlemen, Nobody Wants This, and Only Murders in the Building are the other candidates in the category.
Any historic nominations?
The first openly transgender woman to receive a Globe nomination for a leading part in a motion picture was Karla Sof a Gasc, who plays the title character in Emilia Prez. For the celebration, Gasc’s victory would be an LGBTQ+ milestone.
Amy Adams from Nightbitch, Cynthia Erivo from Wicked, Mikey Madison from Anora, Demi Moore from The Substance, and Zendaya from Challengers are the other actors in the best musical/comedy actress category.
With 11 nominations throughout his career, Denzel Washington enters the program as the most nominated Black performer in Globes history. He was nominated for his supporting role in Ridley Scott’s Gladiator II.
Who is presenting?
Andrew Garfield, Anthony Mackie, Anthony Ramos, Anya Taylor-Joy, Ariana DeBose, Aubrey Plaza, Auli i Cravalho, Awkwafina, Brandi Carlile, Catherine O Hara, Colin Farrell, Colman Domingo, Demi Moore, Dwayne Johnson, Dgar Ram rez, Elton John, Gal Gadot, Glenn Close, Jeff Goldblum, Jennifer Coolidge, Kaley Cuoco, Kate Hudson, Kathy Bates, Ke Huy Quan, Kerry Washington, Margaret Qualley, Michael Keaton, Michelle Yeoh, Miles Teller, Mindy Kaling, Morris Chestnut, Nate Bargatze, Nicolas Cage, Rachel Brosnahan, Rob McElhenney, Salma Hayek Pinault, Sarah Paulson, Sarah Paulson, Seth Rogen, Sharon Stone, Vin Diesel, Viola Davis, and Zo Kravitz are among this year’s impressive lineup of A-list presenters.
Who will get special recognition?
Two notable figures in the entertainment sector will get special recognition. The Carol Burnett Award, which honors exceptional contributions to television both on and off screen, will go to Ted Danson. Prior recipients of the award include Ellen DeGeneres, Ryan Murphy, Norman Lear, and yes, Carol Burnett.
The Cecil B. DeMille Award, which honors exceptional accomplishments to the entertainment industry, will be given to Viola Davis, one of a select few performers who have received the four EGOT medals (Emmy, Grammy, Oscar, and Tony). Eddie Murphy, Jane Fonda, Tom Hanks, Jeff Bridges, and Oprah Winfrey have all received the same honor in recent years.
