On Nov. 28, Thanksgiving Day, the 23rd annual National Dog Show Presented by Purina will resume. Approximately 2,000 dogs representing 205 different breeds will compete for the coveted title of “Best in Show.”
Any dog registered with the American Kennel Club (AKC) may compete in the National Dog Show, which is an open, all-breed event hosted by the Kennel Club of Philadelphia. It is regarded as the sport’s most well-known and watched showcase in America.
How are the winners selected?
Every dog breed competing is placed into one of seven groups that correspond to traits and purposes for which the breeds were first developed.
Sporting, hound, working, terrier, toy, non-sporting, and herding are the seven categories. According to the official breed standard, each dog is evaluated on the basis of its general look, temperament, and structure.
In each of the seven categories, the seven dogs that place “First In Group” fight against each other for the coveted title of “Best In Show” and $20,000 in prizes.
How can it be watched?
The two-hour program, which airs nationwide on NBC from 12:00 to 2:00 p.m. in all time zones right after the Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade, attracts close to 20 million viewers annually.
Peacock, NBC Sports, and the NBC Sports app offer internet streaming for it.
Who’s hosting?
Emmy-winning NBC Sports analyst Mary Carillo, “Seinfeld” star and “Dancing with the Stars” winner John O. Hurley, and David Frei, co-host of NBC’s National Dog Show since its launch in 2002, are hosting the tournament.
What dogs won in the past?
Stache, a little white Sealyham terrier, was the winner last year.
Additionally, all National Dog Shows from 2013 to 2023 are currently available for streaming on Peacockright. The parent corporation of NBC News, NBCUniversal, owns both NBC and Peacock.
