WASHINGTON — For those who may have sided with President Donald Trump, the message is becoming clear: Retribution is imminent.
The Secret Service unit tasked with protecting Trump from Iranian murder threats was lost when former White House national security adviser John Bolton wrote a book that was critical of Trump’s first term.
Anthony Fauci, a public health scientist who Trump referred to as a disaster for his management of the COVID-19 outbreak and who has since been the focus of far-right ire, also lost his detail. (In reaction, Fauci has enlisted his own private security detail.)
The Pentagon’s walls suddenly lost an image of Mark Milley, the former chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff who broke with Trump over a photo op at a church during the George Floyd racial justice demonstrations. According to defense officials, they don’t know who gave the order or why.
Additionally, Trump revoked the security clearances of numerous former national security officials who had signed a letter during the 2020 campaign expressing the opinion that emails from Joe Biden’s son Hunter’s laptop bore the traditional characteristics of a Russian information operation.
All of that occurred in the days, and in some cases, hours, following Trump’s inauguration.

Whether Trump would use his presidential authority to exact revenge on his alleged political opponents was a question that hung over his 2024 campaign. The solution has come for some.
David Laufman, a former senior Justice Department official under both Republican and Democratic administrations, stated in an interview that there are many early warning indicators that validate the worst fears of those who were worried about a second Trump administration and what it would mean for the rule of law. What checks and balances will be in place to stop the authoritarian state from gradually taking over the United States is still the fundamental question.
A query regarding whether Trump personally gave the order or if retaliation was the motivation was not answered by the White House. Trump has justified the cancellation of Secret Service protection for Bolton, Fauci, and others in interviews with reporters in recent days.
Regarding Bolton, Trump remarked, “I thought he was a very dumb person,” adding that the government is unable to provide permanent protection for citizens through the Secret Service. (Lifetime security details are given to former presidents.)
“Your security detail comes off at some point when you work for the government,” he told reporters. You can’t keep them forever, you know.
Meanwhile, a White House spokesperson claimed that the former national security officers were deserving of their security clearances being revoked.
“These individuals helped sell a public relations scam to the American people by abusing their previous positions in government,” said Brian Hughes, a White House National Security Council spokesperson. By abusing their rights to meddle in a presidential election, they seriously undermined the Intelligence Community’s trust. The trust of our country’s institutions is being restored by President Trump’s action.
An observer may become agitated by Trump’s remarks on whether he would carry out punitive actions. Trump was asked last month if he would try to penalize his predecessor, President Joe Biden, in an interview with Kristen Welker, anchor of NBC News Meet the Press.
“I don’t want to go back in time,” he declared. My goal is to see our nation prosper. Success will be the means of retaliation.
However, he is obviously upset about how he feels he has been handled by Democratic politicians, prosecutors, and the courts.
Trump stated last week in an interview with Fox News host Sean Hannity from the Oval Office: I endured four years of hell because of this trash that we had to put up with. I endured agony for four years. I prevailed after paying millions of dollars in legal bills, but it was a difficult journey. Saying that they shouldn’t have to experience it too is extremely difficult. Saying that is really difficult.
Those affected by the Trump administration’s actions so far face differing degrees of hardship. Ten days prior to Trump’s inauguration, Milley’s portrait was presented. It may serve as a message to future leaders that they, too, may be removed from Pentagon history if they lose favor with the commander in chief, given its sudden departure from a wall devoted to the Joint leaders of Staff.
Bolton claimed that since he no longer has his Secret Service detail, he is taking precautions for his own safety. A member of Iran’s feared Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps was prosecuted by the Justice Department in 2022 with plotting Bolton’s assassination, most likely in reprisal for the Trump administration’s death of an Iranian general two years prior.
Bolton told NBC News that since Biden initially gave him a security detail in December 2021, it has been extended every six months, most recently last month.
According to Bolton, this is a component of the retaliation strategy.
“He [Trump] doesn’t really care how serious it is,” he continued. He feels slightly better with every action he can take.
He claimed that in the days leading up to Trump’s inauguration, members of the U.S. intelligence community informed him that the threat of assassination had not diminished.
According to Rosa Brooks, a former senior Defense Department official in the Obama administration and co-leader of the Democracy Futures Project hosted by the Brennan Center for Justice, they are not only ruining his career prospects but also endangering a man’s life as retaliation for his criticism of Donald Trump.
If Iran were to injure Bolton in any manner, the United States might be forced to retaliate militarily, raising tensions and bringing the two countries closer to conflict.
Some who are now in the private sector and require security clearances to fulfill federal contracts may experience financial hardship if individuals who co-signed the Hunter Biden letter are denied them.
“They are now being hurt financially and the country is being hurt because these are people with decades of experience who continue to serve the government after they retire,” stated one interviewee whose security clearance was revoked.
Speaking on condition of anonymity, the individual went on to say that this serves no valid policy purpose. We have every right to alert the American people to the fact that the Russians are still using these information operations to sway American politics and elections, both from the perspective of free speech and our rights as citizens of the United States.
However, it’s unclear how much consideration the new administration put into the punishment announcement. In an interview, Mark Zaid, a lawyer for several of the signatories, stated that the majority of the individuals no longer have a security clearance.
Bolton was also subject to the presidential order that revoked his security clearances, stating that he was being removed for disclosing private material from his government service in his biography, The Room Where It Happened.
Bolton stated that he is unsure if he ever lost his security clearance.
“It doesn’t affect me at all,” he remarked.
