Prime Minister Justin Trudeau was referred to as the “governor” of the “Great State of Canada” by President-elect Donald Trump overnight after he recently threatened to impose taxes on the nation.
“It was a pleasure to have dinner the other night with Governor Justin Trudeau of the Great State of Canada,” Trump tweeted just after midnight on Tuesday in a post on his Truth Social account. “I look forward to seeing the Governor again soon so that we may continue our in depth talks on Tariffs and Trade, the results of which will be truly spectacular for all!”
Requests for response were not immediately answered by Trudeau’s office or the Trump transition team.
Trump said as much last week when he was talking about how his intention to impose tariffs on Canada and Mexico would make the U.S. “rich,” calling the U.S.-Canada trade gap a kind of subsidy, on NBC’s “Meet the Press” anchor Kristen Welker.
“We’re giving Canada more than $100 billion in subsidies annually. Mexico is receiving about $300 billion in subsidies from us. Why are we giving these nations subsidies when we shouldn’t be? In the interview that aired on Sunday, he stated, “Let them become a state if we’re going to subsidize them.”
According to the Associated Press, Trudeau declared Monday that Canada would react to unfair tariffs in the same way that we did eight years ago.
Trump hosted Trudeau at Mar-a-Lago on November 30. The president-elect said on Truth Social that the meeting was “very productive” and that they talked about “fair trade deals,” illegal immigration, and the fentanyl and heroin epidemic.
In West Palm Beach, Florida, Trudeau later told reporters that he had a great talk with Trump, but he declined to answer any further questions.
Doug Ford, the premier of Ontario, was questioned on Fox News last week over Trump’s purported jest about Canada joining the United States.
Trump’s sense of humor was praised by Ford. It is a humorous remark. “I suppose he’s still angry that we set fire to your White House in 1812, and he’s still harboring resentment after 212 years,” Ford added.
Earlier this month, Senator Bernie Sanders, I-Vt., made a joke about how he would be in favor of Canada joining the United States.
He wrote in a post on X, “Trump has suggested that Canada become the 51st state in our union,” “Does that mean that we can adopt the Canadian health care system and guarantee health care to all, lower the cost of prescription drugs, and spend 50% less per capita on health care?”
