Trump says Mexico’s president promised to close the border. She begs to differ.

President-elect Donald Trump and Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum seem to have quite different memories of a meeting that touched on the contentious topic of migration, in what appears to be a case of he said, she said.

Trump posted on social media during the late-Wednesday phone conversation that the Mexican leader had committed to halting immigration to the United States via Mexico.

I just had a great talk with Claudia Sheinbaum Pardo, the new president of Mexico. In a post on Truth Social, he claimed that she had committed to halting migration via Mexico and into the United States, so sealing our southern border. It was a really fruitful discussion!

Trump’s story was different from Sheinbaum’s.

During our discussion with President Trump, I informed him of Mexico’s all-encompassing approach to addressing the migration issue while upholding human rights, she stated on X. We restate that Mexico’s stance is to create bridges between the people and the government rather than to close borders.

Sheinbaum had already claimed to have had a great talk with President Donald Trump.

In reference to the sizable groups of migrants traveling together in the hopes of reaching the United States, she wrote in the post, “I shared with him that caravans weren’t arriving at the northern border because they are being served in Mexico.”

Days after Trump announced that his incoming administration would impose new taxes on imported products from China, Canada, and Mexico starting on January 20, the two leaders spoke over the phone.

In a post on Truth Social on Monday, Trump stated that he intends to impose a 25% tariff on ALL goods coming into the United States from Mexico and Canada. He framed the proposal as a reaction to the continuing fentanyl problem.

According to Trump, the tariff will stay in place until drugs—especially fentanyl—and all illegal aliens halt their invasion of our nation.
