Trump’s inauguration and bitter cold across the U.S.: Morning Rundown

The 47th president of the United States, Donald Trump, will take the oath of office. The long-awaited peace agreement in Gaza saw the release of the first Israeli hostages and Palestinian inmates. Additionally, the Bills defeat the Ravens in the MVP contest.

What to know today is as follows.

Trump set to be inaugurated as the 47th president

Today will be the culmination of Donald Trump’s unlikely comeback, making him the first former president since Glover Cleveland in 1893 to lose reelection and win a second term four years later.

After leading a disastrous attempt to stay in office in spite of his loss in the 2020 election, he resigned. In a New York criminal case involving hush money payments to a porn star prior to the 2016 election, he was indicted four times and found guilty on 34 felony counts.

Trump, however, convinced them that he was the only candidate who would remember them when he returned to power by taking advantage of a weak opposition, the nation’s polarization, and voters’ annoyance with exorbitant pricing. In addition to winning the popular vote, he swept all seven swing states. Voters wanted someone who wouldn’t play nice, and they found their impolitic champion in Trump, who was frequently aggressive and foul-mouthed. He has carved out a special position for himself in the history of America’s self-government experiment.

Trump intends to sign more than 50 executive orders today, making his inauguration noteworthy on several levels. Reversals of Biden administration policies and immigration measures are anticipated to be part of the initial wave. Trump and his followers celebrated yesterday with a rally that lasted for hours at the Capital One Arena in Washington, D.C.

Trump stated throughout the event that by the time the sun sets tomorrow night, the invasion of our borders will have stopped and all of the illegal border trespassers would be returning home in one manner or another.

NBC News will be providing live coverage and commentary of Trump’s inauguration all day long.

Israeli hostages and Palestinian prisoners released under ceasefire deal

Hours after Israel and Hamas’ long-awaited peace went into effect, Israelis celebrated last night the release of the first wave of hostages from the Gaza Strip, which encouraged displaced Palestinians to start the arduous 15-month journey home on foot.

In addition to praising the safe return of three female captives, President Joe Biden said that the weapons in Gaza have stopped firing. The young women were seen grinning and embracing waiting Israeli commandos as they climbed out of a Red Cross vehicle in a video released by the Israeli military.

The three ladies who were freed were Romi Gonen, 24, who was seized from the Nova Music Festival; Emily Damari, 28, a British Israeli citizen who was also taken from the kibbutz; and Doron Steinbrecher, 31, a veterinary nurse who was taken from kibbutz Kfar Aza.

In exchange for the hostages, 90 Palestinian inmates and prisoners—all women and children—were freed from Israeli custody early this morning. 33 hostages will be freed from Gaza in the upcoming weeks, with the latest one anticipated on Sunday.

Many believe the arduous respite will bring a stop to the conflict that has killed over 46,800 people in Gaza, according to local health officials, and enable reconstruction of the enclave, which has been destroyed by fierce Israeli shelling and bombings.

Millions across the U.S. brace for freezing temperatures

As the southern states prepare for bitterly cold temperatures and the Northeast prepares for more rain and snow, more than 175 million people nationwide are under some kind of cold weather notice. As temperatures plunge 10 to 40 degrees below normal due to an extremely cold Arctic airmass, the National Weather Service has issued varying levels of advisories for much of the country for the next few days.

Temperatures in Houston dropped below freezing last night, and officials were battling a separate storm powered by low pressure that was predicted to bring freezing rain and snow today and tomorrow, according to federal forecasters. Due to the weather, Houston’s George Bush Intercontinental Airport and local schools will also be closed tomorrow.

The storm will continue to move northeast, affecting states along the I-95 corridor, and early today, New England will see lingering snow showers. In some areas of the state, 8 to 12 inches of snow were predicted for New Jersey.

Josh Allen outduels Lamar Jackson as Bills advance to AFC Championship, and other highlights from the NFL playoffs

In a matchup of MVP favorites, the Buffalo Bills upset the Baltimore Ravens 27–25. Josh Allen, the quarterback, added two touchdowns on the ground despite not having the best passing performance of his career, which included 127 yards via the air. The Ravens nearly rallied in the end, but Buffalo held the lead for the majority of the game. Lamar Jackson delivered a 24-yard touchdown throw to tight end Isaiah Likely with 1:33 left, cutting the deficit to eight points. Regretfully, tight end Mark Andrews missed a sure-fire score that would have knotted the game on the subsequent two-point convert. Instead, Buffalo ran out of time and regained possession of the ball. Greg Rosenstein, sports editor at NBC News, analyzes a few more NFL playoff highlights:

Washington will play division foe Philadelphia for a Super Bowl berth after advancing to its first NFC Championship since 1991. Yesterday, on a snow-covered Lincoln Financial Field, the Eagles upset the Los Angeles Rams 28–22, led by star running back Saquon Barkley. He ran for 205 yards and two touchdowns, including a game-winning 78-yard score in the fourth quarter.

The Washington Commanders shocked the top-seeded Detroit Lions of the NFC 45-31 on the road, causing the biggest upset of the weekend. Running back Brian Robinson contributed 77 yards and two touchdowns on the ground, while rookie phenom Jayden Daniels passed for 299 yards and two touchdowns. One of the league’s most effective quarterbacks, Jared Goff of the Lions, recorded three interceptions and a lost fumble during the loss.

The Chiefs defeated the Houston Texans 23–14 on Saturday, demonstrating why they are the two-time defending Super Bowl winners. At Arrowhead Stadium, tight end Travis Kelce had a fantastic day, ending with seven catches for 117 yards and a touchdown while his girlfriend Taylor Swift was present. The AFC championship game will pit the Buffalo Bills against the Kansas City Chiefs.

Wine s decline in the U.S.

I asked my neighborhood liquor store in Brooklyn if they had noticed the same thing after reading the San Francisco Chronicle’s wine critic’s post a few weeks ago on red wine restaurants’ declining sales. As it happens, they did, and they had no justification. Was this a national problem? If so, what is the reason? Ash Reynolds, a reporter for NBC News, spoke with six industry insiders and created six charts that illustrate the decline in wine sales across the country. It is caused by a number of variables, including health concerns and demographic shifts, and it occurs in both restaurants and retail establishments.
