Unlock the Art of Sewing: Chautauqua County 4-H Launches Two-Part Sewing Series for Youth

(WNY News Now) Chautauqua County 4-H is inviting kids ages 9 to 18 to participate in a practical sewing program at the JCC Carnahan Center. During the program, participants will sew boxes and pillowcases while gaining useful life skills.

JAMESTOWN, NEW YORK – The Chautauqua County 4-H Leaf Jr. program is welcoming young people aged 9 to 18 to a two-class series on sewing at the Carnahan Center on the JCC Campus!

The inaugural class will take place at the Carnahan Center on the JCC Campus on Thursday, January 23, 2025, at 6:30 p.m. Nancy Johnson, a 4-H volunteer, will assist students in creating a sewing box to hold a basic sewing kit. The box and the basic kit items will be given to the students when they depart.

Students can learn how to operate a sewing machine and make their own pillowcases in the second class, which will take place in the Carnahan Canter on the JCC Campus on February 6, 2025, at 6:30 p.m. Amber Laurie of the Concord Quilting Studio in Ripley, New York, will be instructing this course. Although it is not required, it is encouraged that young people bring their own sewing machine so that we have enough machines for everyone.

4-H members pay $10 for each lesson, while non-members pay $15. Youth are not required to attend both programs, even if they are being marketed as a series. To ensure we have enough resources for everyone, pre-registration is necessary. Participants can register on our website at https://chautauqua.cce.cornell.edu/events/2025/01/23/leaf-junior-sewing-series, by [email protected], or by calling the Extension Office at 664-9502 ext. 212.
