(WNY news Now) Alexis Lundmark uses the USA Scholarship to stay in her hometown, follow her aspirations to become a mental nurse, and play collegiate soccer in memory of her late grandfather.
When choosing a college, Alexis Lundmark always considered her grandfather and family.
The obvious choice was SUNY Jamestown Community College. She could play collegiate soccer there, pursue her goal of becoming a psychiatric nurse practitioner at a school renowned for its nursing department, and it was close to her home in Lakewood.
Equally or even more significant, the Unified Student Assistance Scholarship allowed Lundmark to complete her associate degree without incurring any debt.
The USA Scholarship, as it is more often known, is awarded to freshmen who placed in the top 20% of their graduating class and attended high school in JCC’s service areas of New York and Pennsylvania. Up to four semesters of tuition not covered by grants are paid by the scholarship.
“I knew I wanted to stay home and be with my family, especially my grandpa who ended up passing away two months into the nursing program, so I was really excited when I found out I was getting the USA scholarship,” Lundmark said. My ability to attend this school was greatly aided by the scholarship, which also enabled me to play soccer my first year, something I was quite proud of since it gave me the opportunity to play for my grandfather before, during, and after his death.
Lundmark, a second-year student at JCC, plans to complete her education by transferring to a four-year institution.
Since mental health is a significant aspect of everyone’s lives and deserves further research, I eventually hope to pursue a career in psychiatric nursing, she stated. Because I battled anxiety and depression as a child, I’ve always had a strong interest in mental health, particularly as it relates to nursing. Additionally, I had the desire to assist those who were experiencing the same thing.
Lundmark’s time at JCC has been enjoyable.
Since JCC is probably close to your hometown, I adore recommending it to all of my friends and anyone else who isn’t sure about it, she added. It offers every major that is offered at any college. It’s better financially because you can acquire your associates in just two years.
Lundmark is aware that if she hadn’t put in so much effort in high school, she wouldn’t have been awarded the USA Scholarship.
According to her, it’s crucial to continue studying throughout your life, whether it’s in middle school or high school, before entering college, as high school has a significant impact on your college experience. Scholarships can help you pay for college if you put in a lot of effort in school.
Additionally, I would advise simply persevering. Continue to put in a lot of effort and don’t hesitate to ask for assistance when necessary.
Top intellectuals like Lundmark are drawn to JCC by the USA Scholarship Endowment. More than 3,000 students have received more than $6 million from the program since it began. These pupils often rank among the best performers at JCC and attend for free.
