Vehicle Strikes Pole, Driver Charged with DWAI in Fredonia

(WNY News Now) After reportedly hitting an electric pole and escaping the scene on Route 60 in Fredonia, a driver is facing several counts.

Chautauqua County Sheriff’s Deputies were called to a car collision with a power pole on Route 60 in the Town of Pomfret on January 3, 2025, at around 11:00 AM. Following the incident, witnesses said the driver left the site.

Deputies’ investigation revealed that the driver was Nicholas E. Mooney, a 31-year-old Fredonia resident. Authorities claim that Mooney was using drugs to impair his ability to operate the car (DWAI). Mooney was classified as an aggravated unlicensed operator in the third degree after it was discovered that his license was suspended.

Mooney was charged with DWAI as well as aggravated unlicensed motor vehicle operation in the third degree, fleeing the scene of a property damage accident, and moving from a lane unsafely.

Mooney was taken into custody, processed, and then given appearance tickets before being released. At a later time, he will appear at the Town of Pomfret Court.

The accused is deemed innocent until proven guilty in a court of law, just like everyone else who is accused of a crime.
