Virginia Democrats maintain narrow legislative majorities after special election wins

According to The Associated Press, Democrats were able to hold onto their slim majorities in both houses Tuesday after winning two special legislative races in northern Virginia.

These were the first special elections since President-elect Donald Trump was elected to a second term in November of last year, and they were held in suburban Loudoun County districts. The results will be interpreted as a reflection of Virginia’s political climate, which is staging a significant gubernatorial contest this year and where Republicans have gained ground in recent years, even though Democrats were favored in the races.

Currently serving in the state House, Democrat Kannan Srinivasan defeated Republican Tumay Harding in a special state Senate election. Following state senator Suhas Subramanyam’s election to Congress in November, the seat had been empty.

Additionally, Democrat JJ Singh, a small business owner and former Capitol Hill assistant, defeated Republican Ram Venkatachalam in a special state House campaign. Following Srinivasan’s decision to run for the state Senate, that seat became vacant.

Luther Cifers, a Republican who owns a kayak sales business, defeated Democrat Jack Trammell in a third special election on Tuesday in a Virginia Senate district in the suburbs of Richmond. State Senator John McGuire, who barely defeated U.S. Rep. Bob Good in a fierce Republican primary last year, was elected to Congress, leaving the seat empty.

It had been anticipated that the following candidates would win all three races: According to the Virginia Public Access Project, Trump easily won the Richmond-area district last year, but Vice President Kamala Harris took both of the Loudoun County seats with ease. However, special elections, which are usually low-turnout events, might be unpredictable in off-years. Voters also had to contend with a snow storm that hit the area this week.

In the state Senate, Democrats will command a 21-19 majority following the election of Srinivasan and Cifers. Because GOP Lt. Gov. Winsome Earle-Sears has the power to break ties, the Republicans would have taken control of the chamber if Democrats had lost the special election for the Loudoun County seat.

Democrats will continue to hold a 51-49 majority in the House of Delegates following Singh’s inauguration. A 50/50 tie would have been the outcome of the Republican candidate’s victory.

Delegate-elect Singh and Senator-elect Srinivasan’s resounding wins solidify our Democratic majorities in Virginia and maintain our vital firewall of Democratic state legislatures, said Heather Williams, president of the Democratic Legislative Campaign Committee, whose organization supported both of the party’s candidates in the Loudoun County elections.

Both Srinivasan and Singh centered their campaigns mostly on gun safety, reproductive rights, and party control of respective chambers. Virginia’s Democratic lawmakers have indicated that they will concentrate on promoting a constitutional amendment that would protect the right to an abortion.

The outcome will also affect the battle to succeed Republican Governor Glenn Younkgin and the last year of his term.

Given that Democrats still dominate state legislatures, Youngkin may find it more challenging to achieve any significant policy victories as he prepares to run for higher office.

The campaign for governor of Virginia in November will also be one of the most watched in 2025.

Earle-Sears, Virginia’s first Black woman to occupy statewide office, is the front-runner on the Republican side. As of right now, the sole Democratic contender announced is Representative Abigail Spanberger.
