Vivek Murthy dices a mango for ‘Bon Appetit’ and shares parents’ immigration story

Along with some juicy anecdotes, U.S. Surgeon General Vivek H. Murthy provided a very helpful guide on how to cut a mango.

In a video for “Bon Appetit” magazine on Wednesday, Murthy demonstrated his ability to peel and dice food while recalling a narrative of his parents’ immigration to the United States from India. The headline of the article was “How to cut a mango like a surgeon (general).”

When his parents arrived in the United States, they planted nine different kinds of mango trees because they wanted to “recreate India in the backyard,” according to Murthy.

“Whenever mango season came we would peel them all day long and make mango dishes out of them,” Murthy stated. “Mango bread, mango pudding, mango ice cream, mango cake, mango lassi.”

Murthy, 47, is the youngest active-duty flag officer in the federal uniformed service and the first Indian American surgeon general. He grew up in Miami, which has the ideal climate for mango cultivation.

Murthy assisted in spearheading the country’s response to international health crises such as the Zika virus and Ebola. Additionally, he co-founded the Swasthya Project, which supports rural South Indian women in becoming community educators and health care professionals.
