January 2, 2025Anyone who wants to stop smoking should, in my opinion, understand why they are quitting. The birth of my granddaughter served as the impetus for me to quit smoking. These are the wise words of Bruce G. (pictured), 68, of Lewiston, Western New York, who has been tobacco-free for six months with the help of the New York State Quitline (NY Quitline). In 2025 and beyond, Bruce hopes his experience will encourage others to live a tobacco-free lifestyle.Bruce recalls how society was very different in his early years. He remembers that cigarettes were accessible everywhere and that it seemed like everyone was smoking. When Bruce started a job in printing sales, he started smoking cigarettes in high school and continued to do so whenever he had the chance.”I’ve wanted to stop smoking a lot in my life, and I’ve stopped for a while, but stressful situations always got me back to smoking,” Bruce remarked. After seeing my granddaughter’s lovely face when she was born last year, I knew I didn’t want cigarettes to be among her first smells.Bruce noticed a startling television ad from the New York State Department of Health just as he was coming up with a plan to progressively reduce his cigarette consumption. He called the NY Quitline for more support after seeing the images.

Bruce remarked, “I didn’t want to be a future burden to my family after seeing a family in distress in the advertisement when the father disclosed that he had lung cancer from smoking.” I was able to resist cravings and reorganize my habits with the help of the NY Quitline’s tools. Additionally, my partner, who had already quit smoking, encouraged me at every turn.Living tobacco-free has given Bruce more movement and a sense of independence now. He no longer experiences smoker’s cough and has more energy to enjoy longer walks.According to Bruce, being addicted to cigarettes seemed like a jail. One of the many reasons I should continue to abstain from tobacco use for the rest of my life is the sight of individuals smoking outside while shivering in the winter.
