Williamsville Teen Tackles Bullying with Award-Winning App in 2024 Congressional App Challenge

(WNY News News Now) Williamsville East High School student Jessica Park has been selected as the 2024 Congressional App Challenge winner for New York’s 23rd District, demonstrating a creative approach to bullying.

Washington, D.C.The winner of the 2024 Congressional App Challenge for New York’s 23rd District is Jessica Park of Williamsville East High School, according to Congressman Nick Langworthy (NY-23). By increasing awareness of the psychological and neurological impacts of bullying on victims, onlookers, and bullies themselves, her app, StandUP, seeks to combat bullying.

Students in Western New York and the Southern Tier demonstrated their ingenuity, problem-solving abilities, and coding abilities through the Congressional App Challenge. Congressman Langworthy congratulated Jessica Park of Williamsville East High School, the 23rd District of New York’s winner of this year’s Congressional App Challenge.Jessica’s software, StandUP, demonstrates her skill and diligence in creating a solution for a pressing problem that her peers are confronting. I’m honored to back initiatives that promote STEM education and acknowledge the promising futures of our neighborhood’s youth.

Jessica’s software will be showcased on the official Congressional software Challenge website and in the U.S. Capitol Building, honoring her creativity and encouraging kids around the country to choose STEM careers.

Jessica went on to say, “My personal experiences and a strong desire to meaningfully address bullying served as the inspiration for creating StandUP.” I witnessed the effects of bullying in my school and society as a child, and it had a profound effect on me.

An official program of the U.S. House of Representatives, the Congressional App Challenge encourages middle school and high school students to learn to code and to pursue professions in computer science by having members of Congress hold competitions in their districts. At our annual #HouseOfCode festival, each participating Member of Congress chooses a winning app from their district, and the winning team is invited to present their app to Congress.
