The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) has identified important safety hazards related to home heating appliances, such as space heaters, furnaces, and fireplaces, as winter approaches. Among the biggest threats are fires and carbon monoxide (CO) poisoning, which disproportionately affect communities that are already at risk.
Space Heater Safety
According to CPSC data, space heaters are involved in 1,700 fires every year, resulting in 160 injuries and 70 fatalities. To reduce the dangers:
- Keep heaters at least three feet from flammable materials.
- Plug heaters directly into wall outlets, not power strips or extension cords.
- Turn heaters off when unattended or while sleeping.
Furnaces and Fireplaces
Chimneys and fuel-burning systems must be inspected annually. CO poisoning and fires can result from malfunctioning or obstructed systems. According to CPSC estimates, chimneys and fireplaces result in 15,800 fires, 20 fatalities, and 50 injuries every year.
Generator Safety
According to the CPSC, one of the main causes of CO poisoning is portable generators. Avoid using generators in enclosed areas and always run them outside, at least 20 feet away from houses.
Smoke and CO Alarms
- Install smoke alarms on every level and in bedrooms.
- Place CO alarms on each level and near sleeping areas.
- Test alarms monthly and replace batteries annually or use 10-year sealed models.
Additional Tips
- Use flashlights instead of candles during power outages.
- Check for recalled heating products at www.cpsc.gov/recalls.
These CPSC-recommended safety precautions will help shield your family from avoidable winter dangers.
