(WNY News Now)Buffalo, New YorkA Winter Weather Advisory has been issued for Allegany County by the Buffalo National Weather Service (NWS), and it will be in effect from January 2 at 3:16 AM EST to January 5 at 6:00 PM EST. A lake effect snow event is predicted to bring heavy accumulations and strong gusts, so locals and visitors are advised to prepare for difficult circumstances.
Snow and Wind to Create Treacherous Conditions
Additional snow accumulations of 6 to 12 inches are warned of in the alert, particularly in the higher elevations of western Allegany County. Up to 40 mph gusts of accompanying winds could cause blowing and drifting snow, which would significantly impair visibility.
Thursday’s morning and evening commutes are expected to be affected by the dangerous weather, with drivers at risk due to snow-covered roads and low visibility.
Rapid Weather Changes Likely
The NWS warns that dramatic changes in weather conditions over short distances can result from lake effect snow, which frequently occurs in small bands. Road conditions and visibility are expected to vary, with some regions seeing a lot of snow and others remaining largely clear.
Safety Instructions
In the event that travel is required, residents are encouraged to keep abreast of weather conditions and make appropriate plans. To support continued weather monitoring, the NWS advises sending in snow reports via their website or social media accounts.
Important Safety Advice:
