YCSO Launches Free Project Lifesaver Program for At-Risk Wandering Citizens

SC’s York County The York County Sheriff’s Office (YCSO) is pleased to announce that it has joined the globally acclaimed Project Lifesaver Program, a quick response effort created to identify people who are at danger of wandering because of cognitive impairments.

Residents of York County can now participate in the initiative, which offers radio-frequency tracking bracelets to those with special needs, including those with Alzheimer’s, autism, Down syndrome, traumatic brain injury, dementia, and epilepsy. In order to be eligible, participants must be in the custody of a family member or caregiver who promises to keep the device in good working order and alert YCSO in the event of an emergency.

Sheriff Kevin Tolson stated, “This proactive approach is about saving lives and reducing injury risks for our vulnerable community members.” When every second counts, we can guarantee a prompt response by cooperating, giving our families and communities hope and peace of mind.

A transmitter wristband with a distinct signal that runs on batteries is given to each participant. Caretakers can contact 9-1-1 right away if a participant becomes lost, and K-9 units and skilled deputies with specialized tracking devices will come to their aid.

Although York County citizens can use the service for free, the YCSO is looking for sponsors to help pay for the program and help buy transmitter wristbands for people who are at risk. Project Life Saver is supported by the Sweet Repeat Charitable Foundation, the Women’s Club of York County, the Women’s Club of Rock Hills, and Qwik Trip Convenience Stores.
