DeSantis Urges Caution on Accepting Gaza Refugees

Republican presidential candidate Ron DeSantis stated on Saturday that the United States should not admit Gaza refugees amidst escalating Middle East conflict. During a campaign event in Iowa, the Florida governor expressed his views, saying, “When you observe the behavior of people in Gaza, not all of them are affiliated with Hamas, but they all hold anti-Semitic views.”

In response to Hamas’ recent attacks, Israel is expected to initiate a ground invasion of northern Gaza. Evacuation orders have proven challenging for Palestinians in Gaza, as the directive covers an area with over 1.1 million residents, approximately half of the territory’s population, and requires them to relocate to the southern half of the 25-mile strip.

DeSantis conveyed, “We should not admit individuals from Gaza as refugees into our country,” while suggesting that “the Arab states” should provide refuge for them. He emphasized that “flying individuals in and importing them into the United States of America” is not the appropriate course of action.

DeSantis, a staunch supporter of Israel, called for a “rapid and forceful response” in the wake of Hamas’ recent attack. Additionally, he signed an executive order on Thursday, instructing the state to facilitate charter flights for American citizens departing from Israel, in addition to those already arranged by the Biden administration.
