The New Orleans Police Department (NOPD) is currently investigating a fatal traffic accident that occurred on September 19, 2023, at South Claiborne Avenue in the Eighth District. The accident happened around 10:09 p.m. and tragically resulted in the loss of two adult males who were riding a motorized dirt bike.
Initially, officers from NOPD’s Eighth and First Districts responded to a distress call reporting a crash with injuries. Subsequently, the NOPD Traffic Fatality Unit assumed control of the investigation. Their findings indicate that the accident involved a Honda Accord sedan and a motorized dirt bike.
The preliminary investigation revealed that the Honda Accord was traveling in the left eastbound lane of South Claiborne Avenue, attempting to make a left turn onto Gravier Street. Concurrently, the dirt bike, carrying the two men, was passing the sedan within the same lane. The collision occurred at the intersection.
As a result of the crash, both individuals riding the dirt bike were ejected and were discovered beneath the overpass. Emergency services pronounced one man deceased at the scene, while the other was transported to a local hospital where he later succumbed to his injuries. The occupants of the Honda Accord were unharmed and remained at the scene, fully cooperating with authorities.
